How many of you out there opted for giving gift cards instead of a "present"..??

What was your reason for your choice of gift card/present??

And who thinks giving gift cards was a "cop out"???

Depends on the person for me. I personally like the thought behind the gift. It makes me feel special when I know that someone selected a card specifically with me in mind and that they took some care in handwriting a note. I like to choose gifts that both reflect the personality and tastes of the receiver and that are meaningful coming from me.

I have resorted to a gift card for one person on my list though. She either returned, donated or stored everything I have ever given her - and I took great care in choosing well, listened for hints all year etc. This year I'll give her exactly what she wants...a gift card and another excuse to hit the mall. She will be thrilled and look at how thoughtful it is ... grin

I used to think when they first appeared that they are a cop-out but frankly the people I shop for have shown little appreciation for the carefully selected gifts in the past and my sons...well as young adults they really do prefer cash or gift cards.

So frankly, they've made my life a whole lot easier and I haven't started shopping yet and am not the least concerned!

I prefer cash or a gift card. Then the person has the choice to do with it as they please. Lorraine.

I myself have found it tiresome to find "room" for all the "gifts" i get that i have no idea what to do with...roll eyes

And i find it disappointing to see that someone may not appreciate a gift i thought was perfect for them and spent a lot of time looking for...

Even for my own daughter i have now found that it is much easier to give her gift cards and take her shopping than to choose something for her...I obviously have no clue as to what young people wear/like anymore!!laugh

I find gift cards (and some thought had to go into which store to get the card from right???) is a "smart" way of shopping...

i happen to think gift cards rock. Not a cop out coz as a gift i can get what i want. Most of the time you recieve gifts you dont want or need so why not get some you truly like.
As for giving gift cards, all my long distance family recieves them from me. Wrapping presents, then boxing, then sending in a parcel is expensive. A gift card fits nicely into a card. So much easier, practical and chances are the reciever will appreciate it more.

I think personal gifts to a spouse, or your kids should be gifts and not gift cards though.

Why should my taste appeal any more to my "spouse"/"kids" than they would to my friends Darren?

I would love to shop for my kids...I loved doing that...just to watch their eyes roll up in their head when they opened the perfectly wrapped, perfectly chosen gift I had boughtroll eyes

Ya for the kids i think gifts are a must. the opening of the presents is the fun part. As for your partner too...a wrapped give shows you put time into it. well usually anyway. lol

So why not just send a cheque or give cash? Then, the person can use it for whatever they choose - to pay the gas bill, buy groceries or "just for Urs" - to buy shoes? Lorraine.

I can't stand shopping at WalMart. I received a gift card from there last year. I ended up giving it to my daughter.

So, as I wrote before, I recommend giving cash or writing a cheque. Then the person can use it for whatever they want or need.

Lorraine.

I have gotten a few gift certificates this year. I got one for my parents, one for each of my brothers.

Personaly I don't think they are cop outs at all. I think its a great idea for those whom have everything or those you do not know what to get. That way with Gift Certificates you can't insult someone. Either way they will like it because they can use it to get whatever they want.

As for my reasons why I got GC's this year? Because I didn't know what to get my brothers who are picky and seem to have everything. And as for my parents. I wasn't sure what to get them and with my mom being sick and can not cook much. I have gotten them gift certificates for their most favorite restaurant because I know they will love and appreciate it. I also got them both each some presents from the kids aside from the GC's.

:o)
