Good service, I would never leave a tip for a waitress who was rude.

I leave at least 20%, even if the service wasn't very good. Waitpeople do not usually, make even minimum wage as a salary. Their income is primarily from tips. I have worked in the restaurant business many years, from busboy to management and most waitpeople are very nice. Sometimes they may just be having a tough day, and it shows, unfortunately, for you. So please tip well...alot of waitpeople are either single moms or college kids who need the money.thumbs up

i see what you are saying but some are just rude . if they think you dont have money they treat you as such . because they think you wont tip them i know this to be so ive ate at lots of places and use to always leave tips . till i seen the way some people are treated diffrently by what they wear. i have came in to a place on lunch break and because i was in work cloths they thought i had no money so i was treated as such. needless to say when it was time to tip i told them i was going to leave a tip but because they was rude wet match dont burn . realising what they done a little late after i payed for all six of my friends meal then they tryed to be nice so its not always because of a bad day.

Good Service equals good tip...I don't give a damn what their wage is....if you want a good tip...Hustle for it....give me good service...and I'll give you a fat tip....give me poor service and I'll write..."plant your corn early, it's gonna be a warm spring" on the receipt....there's your tip.

Biggest measure is if my, or anyone at my table, drink runs dry....I'll start the deduction there...or if I want something and I have to wait and wait for the waitstaff to show up......

My favorite places are small diners and family-owned establishments. I suspect the waitress or waiter is not getting into their new 'Benz to go home.

Nor am I, and nor do I expect for the general public to make up for the the fact that my "boss" is too cheap to pay me a decent wage in the first place. Got any idea what the markup is on food and beverages, particularly alcoholic beverages? Not like the restaurant industry cannot afford to pay its workers a decent wage.

If you want to donate to charity, you should do so... but supporting a server that is not earning that tip is akin to throwing your money out the window.

Operative word here is "almost" always. I agree - would never tip well if the server is not earning it. Of course, you tip well at a place you frequent, you are remembered, and always served well.

I have worked in food service for 15 years. I take it very seriously. I think most servers should find another type of employment. They seem to treat you as they are doing you a favor rather than that's their job. I come to a table expecting nothing. I am friendly but not overly so. I fill glasses and stand at a distance and watch for anything I could think of that they might need to be more comfortable and I bring it without asking or saying a word (except you're welcome) as I sit it down for them. I almost NEVER get stiffed, even from people that are notorious non-tippers. If it does happen, I don't worry about it as long as I know I gave them the best service I could. I figure they either are hurting on money or just don't believe in tipping. I always make up for it on the next table.

A few weeks ago, I had a party of 12 older ladies. They ran me to death. I hardly had time to breath. At the end of their meal, several said I was the best server they had ever met. They left me about $3.00 between all of them. UGH That's life.

My biggest reasons not to leave a good tip....

A server that never checks back.

A server that talks me to death and becomes a part of the conversation. This is so rude. The family is there to enjoy themselves and are paying you to be a SERVER not a friend.

Sorry.....I have a lot to say on this topic...I'll be going now.

i tend to agree with duce.... i have left up to a $20 tip, but it was for exceptional service... and generally if i'm not happy i leave 2 cents... just so they know i didn't forget... i think there is a delicate balance of good service and bugging someone to death.... the glasses should be full, they should be conversational if you try to talk to them and they should leave you alone... i like to NOT notice them or need them because they anticipate... if they don't do that or i find them rude, well, they will be very unhappy... i used to go to once particular place regularly and if we got one certain server they alway ot atleast $5, but if someone else got us and they were rude, they got .02 cents.... they eventually caught on.
