good idea this thread. just a word about "embrocation" that you mentioned. it' s a french word, still used in pharmacy, as oily liquid for therapeutic massages, especially for rheumatism and arthrosis.

my favorite old french term is "que nenni" . i have always heard it at my grand parents and adopted it for a life time as it is a cool way to say no gently with a pinch of humor.

Tulefell: Do you mean English old words?

.
My apologies I could not find this thread so now I have I will answer you.

Not necessarily English because we are international but you can explain the word if it's in your own language.

Again my friend called with new year greetings and he said "Sue is out doing the bagwash so I thought I would give you a call"

Hmmmm.....not so much old words....more old proverbs.

My Dad was a beaut with them....his timing was brilliant....and it would usually sum things up nicely.

Yanno the ones:

"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink"

"Never look a gift-horse in the mouth"

"Birds of a feather......flock together"

"Too many cooks spoil the broth"....etc.

I hear myself repeating them to my children now. wine
