Birds follow the magnetic lines of force of the earth a lot like the way planes and ships do. only they don't have a compass. There is microscopic iron particles in their brain which picks up the earth's magnetic field, That enables them to navigate along these lines to their destination.

I’m trying to picture how this might work. So, these ion particles in their brains are initially at distant points in the gray matter and so the closer they get to their migration location, the iron particles get closer until their are on top of each other or in a big cluster so they then know it’s time to propagate?

I don't think it works anywhere like that. It's been years since I read an article about this subject in Scientific American as I remember the iron particles in the birds brain detects this line of magnetic energy and if they veer off left or right they correct their direction drift to get back on the beam. I imagine they can tell the strength of the line to know which line they want to follow. I think they supplement the electrical signal with visual clues as they travel.
I wonder what the bible says about this question. probably something like god guides the birds back to their home. Riiiiiight.
BTW, the bible can't be the word of god if it's been re-written 84,000 times! Hello?
