I'm off to see 'first man' today... It's been a while since I've been gee'd up enough to head out to the big screen in limerick...here's hoping it has the edge that made Apollo 13 (the film by Ron Howard) the essential watch that it was in its day...

First man....
Director Damien Chezelle teams up with Ryan Gosling for a second time in this biopic of Neil Armstrong (first man on the moon)... Much has been said of this movie, including the usual hyperbole of it being the best movie of the year this far...
The story starts in 1961 and runs through till late 1969, right after the first moon landing... There are no spoilers in what is after all a drama built around the family dynamic and the race to beat the Russians in space... This is not edge of the seat entertainment like Apollo 13, more a study of a very private man who's life was visited by grief on a number of occasions... Gosling turns in a wonderfully controlled performance alongside Claire Foy who plays his wife Janet...
It's a film in 8 halves (I know), intercutting home life and nasa developmental set pieces one after the other... The visuals are stunning, the opening 5 minutes as visceral as any cinema I have ever seen, but the real hero here is sound production, which I'd be very surprised if it doesn't get an award for...
A character study more than an adventure film, intelligent, well paced and at 2 hours 20 minutes, a blip in time... The history of the American space program is chronicled satisfactorily to the unknowing (myself) and there's little to say but see it on the biggest screen you can manage....
I'd give it 4.5 / 5...my one bug bare was the hand held camera work earlier on in the film, a little reminiscent of the cinema verite style, really not my thing I have to say... Other than that one small gripe, I found this a solid piece of storytelling with a wider cast putting in the same measured performances as the leads... Recommended.... thumbs up

Compensation if released again.....
I recon I'm going to heave to give this a watch sooner rather than later....
I'm just as likely to be off the mark here... But since it's the entertainment thread, and if you've the metal for it... 'capturing the Friedmans', a documentary by Andrew Jarecki... A true story of a family involved in child molestation that got accendentaly uncovered by a documentary maker following a member of the family in his daily work as a children's clown entertainer... Strong subject very well handled...

I'm all for those kind of films/documentAries.

I watch anything on serial killers...I find them...for want of a better word...fascinating to watch...just to get an idea of those kinds of minds.

Sky, either sky witness or universal channel... Very good series about a young medical intern with asburgers syndrome... Second season starting next Tuesday I believe...
Also well worth a TV watch, 'the resident' and 'Chicago med' (yeah, I like the medical dramas after getting hooked on house).... New season's of both will be on our screens before Christmas....

No! There is a whole site dedicated to those interested in viewing these true crime stories. I have seen most of them and I don’t think I am too weird. I suppose most people are interested in forensic sciences!

While it's not strictly 2018, this is the entertainment tread, so probably the best place for this post...
While posting with mysteriousgirl80 the subject of Joyce Carol Vincent arose...
Joyce made the headline news in 2006 after her body was found in her London flat....she died in 2003, and wasn't discovered until bailiffs broke into the house to recover rental arrears.... This is her story, told by those who knew her....
Joyce was also the subject of Steven Wilson's 'hand cannot erase' CD released in 2015, (played out as a first person account of her life)...

Dreams of a life....
