Another school shooting? Oh My! (52)

18 children, three adults killed by armed gunman in Uvalde,Texas.

Let's all wring our hands; pray for the victim families; discuss mental illness; and then go back to our daily lives until next week when it happens again!
Why are assault rifles legal to purchase - anywhere?
The rest of the world will shake their heads and wonder what is wrong with Americans that we allow our most vulnerable to be killed daily by gun deaths. Can we have a reasonable conversation that starts with the question:

How can we protect the students who attend our schools from crazy men with guns?

There have been 27 school shootings this year. The madness must stop! Our children are worth protecting.

it's not the gun. ask congress why they're willing to beef up armed security and more for themselves but not our schools?

they help encourage violence and riots. until it gets closer to them. then they blow it out of proportion for political gain. they'll talk about control that isn't needed before they'll talk about protecting and serving in the manners it should.

The second amendment was not intended to protect the right of Americans to won assault rifles. The only reason for a semi-automatic rifle is to kill people. The assault rifle ban worked - but then Congress did not re-authorize the law in 2004. Guess what happened? Alot of what we are witnessing is because of the easy availability of weapons to young men. A formula for disaster, accident and stupidity.

Young male + alcohol + anger + gun = somebody getting hurt or dying.

No one is proposing an outright ban on guns. Hunting rifles, pistols, target guns and shotguns are not the issue here. None of these weapons have been used in the various mass shootings. Complain and whine if you must. No American parent is eager to arm their children with guns before going to school.
Guns are not the answer to a gun problem. When will we learn that people are more valuable than your gun!

i already know what the laws in texas allow. no assault rifles are available to the general public in any state.

how about that government that beeefs up it's own security how ever it wants when ever it wants yet denies those same securities to certain institutions and functions?

ever think of that? of course not. parrots only speak what they're told.

Nine states and DC regulate high-capacity magazines. Those states have far fewer mass shootings than Texas where magazine capacity is wide open.

Boston U researcher Dr. Michael Siegel proved that whether a state has a large capacity ammo magazine ban is the single best predictor of mass shooting incidents.

No civilian has any business with massive firepower.

Most civilized countries grok this fact.

US needs to catch up and stop the insanity around guns.

“Every citizen shall have the right to keep and bear arms in the lawful defense of himself or the State; but the Legislature shall have power, by law, to regulate the wearing of arms, with a view to prevent crime.”
Texas Gun Provision

No permit to purchase. No background check.
No registration of firearms. No waiting period.
No license of gun owners. No requirement to have gun training and safety education.
No permit to carry. Of Rifles or handguns.

Is this the right the second amendment was meant to protect?
Do we really support 18 year old boys walking in and buying an AK47 or an AR15 without some background check? Are we safer allowing people to open carry without a permit? Does it make sense to allow people to purchase deadly weapons without any check on criminal background or mental stability?

Mincing words will not reduce the need for better legislation. Yes, you are correct that 'assault rifle' is a mis-used term to get people excited about gun violence. It does not diminish the fact that Americans are well endowed with guns (400 million and counting) and depending on where you live, guns can be used with ease for legitimate and illegal uses. A few random statistics on gun violence:

Only a dozen of the USA’s 50 states require permits to purchase a gun
19,379 gun violence deaths were recorded in the US in 2020. 500 gun deaths per day in the USA.
612 mass shootings happened in 2020
America’s gun suicide rate is ten times higher than many European countries
The USA sees 100 times more firearm-related deaths per 100,000 people compared to Germany
There are 316 people shot in America every day
11 US presidents have been victims of an attempted assassination involving firearms
More than 75% of first and second graders know where their parents keep firearms

I do not want to hear that school shootings and mass murders are not a gun problem. Covering your eyes will not make gun violence go away. Changing the subject will not solve the gun violence problem. Arming teachers, or ministers, or store owners or movie theatre managers will not solve the gun violence problem.

Let's get serious about discussing the problem facing America with gun violence. We cannot keep people safe by arming every person with a gun. It is ludicrous!

armalite rifles and their type ARE NOT assault rifles.

m-16s, ak-47's,- those are true assault rifles and examples of such. they can fire fully automatic. THAT is what an assault rifle is. primarily weapons used by militaries and certain u.s. law enforcement agencies.

most states require 21 to purchase a handgun. a back ground check is required in all.

many states allow 18 years of age for rifles because that is a primary fire arm for hunting in many forms. including but not limited too shotguns. the 5.56 round used by the U.S. military is pretty much the same round as a .223.

ammunition magazine and clip capacities DO NOT deter or stop anything. people just carry more of them.

You didn't address the law in Texas. As long as there are 50 states that produce thousands of laws regulating or not regulating guns - what we get is chaos and confusion. I am not surprised by the local police response to the deadly shooting in Uvalde,Texas - the police don't know what to do and don't have training to combat the level of armed citizens who know more about guns than they do.

So much for the NRA slogan: 'The best way to stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun".
When the good guys run - what you have is bad guy authority. Not where anyone wants to live.

More guns and stupid laws are not the answer. Responsible gun ownership is what is needed.

1. Background checks
2. Required gun training for ownership
3. A national data base of people who cannot purchase a gun or ammunition.
4. A common sense - fact based - discussion about keeping Americans safe in a violent society.
5. A halt on the sale of armor piercing, hollow point and other ammunition not used for hunting or sport shooting.

All good points, However, you do not address the problem.....

1. How can we keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of untrained, angry young men?

2. What training is needed for law enforcement to be qualified to address a citizen armed with a dangerous weapon?

3. What is the best way to address the manufacture, sale and purchase of illegal weapons?
