It is true that we get what we give. But there is a contradiction in this. Do we get what we give?
For example:
If I give pain to someone, I will also get pain sometime. But why did the person whom I hurt get pain? Did he ever gave me pain and in return he got pain from me? And the pain I have given to him, will I also get pain from him in return?

This contradiction you point out is sort of what the lyrics of the song in post number two is saying…. or maybe it is saying settle for less? For example:

No, we do not always get what we give.
For example, there's such a thing as "unrequited love" - you love, but the other person/s persons do not reciprocate.
Due to how persons may have been socialized, their personal experiences and preferences, and even the mood they may be in at a particular time, the response that they give for your kindness and respect (or even your un-kindness and dis-respect) may not be what we'd like.

That was the 1990s where we got considerably more than we ever gave. Inheriting a position from our ancestors so big that we couldn't fail. Well, not couldn't fail exactly but certainly defer failure to whoever is unfortunate enough to come after.
