Is it really that rare...?

Do you feel anything...
At all...?

I believe Empathy to be the strongest human emotion...
Stronger than Love even...

Spikks. You can't expect straight up empathy on social media hun.
Not just like that. Though, there are exceptions!
Still, it exsists between the lines and so on...

This is not about the empathy on a web site, but in real life...

I think compassion is greater than empathy. Better to feel for than feel with.

With empathy you feel their feelings, where with compassion you really could not care any less...it is a show and boast emotion...

I'll answer chronologically:

1. I don't believe it is rare.
2. Yes, I "feel" many things.
3. I don't know if Empathy is the strongest human emotion--think "survival mode"-VERY strong emotion..

To truly be 'empathetic', one has to have experienced the same situation or circumstances. For example, a person can 'care', be tender, loving, etc...in many situations that could be seen as sad, or bad, negative, debilitating, and so on, but if not having experienced the same, this is called "Sympathy". Again, 'empathy' means you know what the other person is going through because you also have.

Survival mode is life or death...not an emotion...
You need not have experienced the situation...you feel it all...

When feeling empathy for someone it doesn't necessarily follow that you will act to help them, .
Empathy was sometimes referred to as sentimental compassion and what we call compassion was sometimes known as great compassion.
Compassion is more likely to result in actions to improve the well being of someone who is believed to be suffering. Empathy, more often than not just results in feelings and not actions.

I respectfully disagree. The definition of empathy is knowing because one has experienced the situation as well. Not having experienced the situation but caring is sympathy. They are similar, but definitively different in character.

And to think of all that money I paid to send my niece to Pepperdine--why, I could have just ignored centuries of learning and made up my own rules!

Yeah the lack of... It's something we've created in western culture - individualistic values have fueled the growth of narcissism ... compared with a society that focuses on more collective values...

There's nothing rare about empathy.
The psychological term became fashionable for some reason and exclusitivity was attached to it in recent years.
Empathy is simply guessing or imagining the feelings and thought of others.
"It captures the ability to project one's own feelings, striving and movements into the shape of objects"
In the early 20th century this term was quintessentially an aesthetic impulse.
Originally it was supposed to translate the German term for "in-feeling".
So, nothing special here, people can relax and go back to be compassionate.
