You might be recalling the Jonestown Massacre. Jim Jones moved his large American cult to create a jungle village in Central/South America. They did mass suicide with poisoned koolaid, those who refused were shot. Not great choices.

My favorite was the Heaven's Gate cult. They believed that if they committed suicide, the aliens travelling on the Haley Bop comet would pick them up like a taxi.

The death toll is now up to 133 and they are still looking for more. A couple of odd twists.
Not all died from starvation. Some of them died from strangulation, beating and suffocation. Also, some of the corpses were missing organs. The police suspect some sort of organized organ harvesting was taking place.

You would think they would have to make sure the "donor" was compatible with the recipient before hand. And you have a finite window to transport the organ.That would require a good degree of organization.
