Here's a question for the people in the mid to late 30's and older...

Do you find it awkward calling the man/woman you are dating your boyfriend/girlfriend???

I would never address him as the "boy" i'm seeing...so why should i call him my "boy"friend???...I just find it a very juvenile term for the man in my life...

At the same time I cannot imagine myself introducing him as the "man i'm sleeping with"...lol...or anything else of that nature...

I know there are other terms like "partner" and "significant other", but would you really introduce him/her as such to your co-workers and friends??

So is there another term that can be used for the people who are no longer "boys" and "girls"???

even though that word is what they are to you as well....does it really encompass ALL that they are to you??

I mean you have "friends" at work or in your neighbourhood, but you are not sleeping with all of them, nor sharing your "goals" with them...so is it fair to pin "friend" to them as you would your co-workers when they should mean so much more to you??

Partner is the first one that came to mind... however that would imply more of a long-term relationship, not someone who you have only been seeing for a short time!

for co-workers:
This is xxxxx, he is currently applying for the position of my bed buddy! LOL

friend is almost insulting to your "partner" - it categorizes them with everyone else in your life and doesn't show the "rank" in which they hold in your life!

most people will understand that its not a true friend in the sense of a what we think of a friend
its the way it is said in a way that a person would know that is more then a friend

when i was in a relationship i was comfortable being introduced as ""there""" friend
because when we met the people again a second time they understood that is was more then friends but it was better then saying this is my boyfriend
and partner i am not comfortable with that word but that is me
everybody is different - right

Hi Urs,

I would introduce my man as "my gentleman friend". If he would introduce he as "his lady" - I would be honoured. Lorraine.

I guess introducing him simply as your man would be an acceptable alternative!

Sometimes I still say boyfriend. Depends on the person I am with etc..

Sometimes I just say "My man" (well we are french here so I mostly say "mon homme")

And if its just dating and its still early I just tell people "the man I am seing"

cheers

Yeah, the phraseology is kinda awkward.

How about, Hi, let me introduce you to the person I wake up for every day.
