Today I get a phone call from an unfamiliar number...I answer "Hello" and get a "Hi" from a Male stranger on the other end! "How are you" He says..."Oh, Im good" as I wonder do I even know this person! he contiuned "How was your day" "It was ok I guess" I replied. Then I blurted out..."Who is this" and he says " Your ex-husband" I say...."Hmmm, really" (now mind you, I am legally seperated, but my husband is arabic, and his accent is very strong) this man had perfect English! He says...."Yeah, Im in town for the week and thought maybe we could get together" Now if this WAS my ex...He had BALLS to call and ask me that...Then he says...."Holly"...and I say..."who" .... ah.....thats when I figured it out...Wrong number! We had a good laugh about it....it was funny afterwards but boy was my blood boiling at first!
So, have you ever had an experience with the wrong number? do tell!
I had a guy call me once. He was looking for someone by the name of Amanda (my real name). We were very confused for a few minutes. After we figured out it was the wrong number he decided he would try hitting on me. After being very nice but annoyed for about five minutes, I told him I had no time for him and he shouldn't call again. He called about five more times during the next few days. I had to have a friend answer the phone and act like my boyfriend to get it to stop.
When my friend Ellen and I lived together we'd get wrong numbers all the time. She'd always end up talking to them like they were long lost friends and even went out with a few of them. Never missed an opportunity.....
I keep getting calls for "Dennis" on my cellphone. People would argue me up and down that they had just spoken to him at my number, blah, blah, blah. Then one day I get a call from "Dennis". He's like hey, you have my old phone number and I was just wondering if you are getting any calls for me...LOL I told him yes, all the time, and if he would give me his new number, I would gladly pass it on, so they would stop calling me. He just laughed and then asked if I was married. I told him "not today" and he has never called back. But I still get calls for him.
I've gotten several "wrong number" calls over the years. Most uneventful and short, some that were down right funny. One of my closest friends and I only had one digit difference in our numbers for several years - mine was 9495 and his was 9496 - The greatest (funniest, most embarrassing) wasn't a wrong number, but a case of mistaken identity:
It was dark and I was at a local celebration in the city park in the town of Victoria, Ks. The dance had started about an hour earlier and the beer garden had been open all day. As I was walking across the dance area, on my way to the restroom, a very pretty (and slightly intoxicated!) young lady approached me from behind, grabbed my shoulders and spun me around, saying "Hey Cowboy, I've been looking for you all night!" Then she planted a kiss on me that damn near made my toes curl. Then, still holding my arms, she stepped back, looked at me more closely and exclaimed, "HEY! You're not Scott!!!" I started laughing and said, "No Ma'am - But I will be for tonight!"
My (now ex) wife had been standing about 20 feet away and witnessed the whole thing and when I told her what happened, she cracked up! For weeks after that, she would come up behind me, grab me and say "Hey, you're not Scott!" and walk away cackling to herself.
I got one yesterday....the girls says, "Someone called me from this number...." It's a cell phone that stays in my pocket or purse, so I know that her number wasn't called. My response: " I highly doubt it". She said okay and hung up.....
I have a friend who is really upset with me right now for a very bad reason, so she tends to get her other friends to go psycho and do stupid stuff. My response to her is to grow the f up!
I had an obscene call once. I talked to her for a few minutes then she hung up. She and I talked several times that weekend. She then told me not to return call her anymore.
99% of my wrong numbers are from telemarketers looking for the 100,000 different people who apparently had the # before me.
So, I'll just toss in a call I made that made me smile.
I called a client and a little girl, maybe five, answered. I asked for her mommy and she, in a very cheerful voice, here is the jist of her end of the conversation... "Mommy's in a meeting with the contactor! (contractor, she was building a new home) They make funny noises like when Daddy's here. I hope they get done soon, I let puppy into the ridgerator and he made a biiiig mess. I've got eggs in my pants 'cause I want to be a chicken when I grow up! I'm going to go lay them on the couch! bye!"
When I get wrong calls, I usually answer like a deep voiced mortician, and politely inform the caller that the party they are trying to reach is either: dead, dying in a hospital, under arrest, missing or drunk and passed out...I never get the same caller again. An easy way to deflect them is , find our the name of the nearest psychiatric hospital around you and use the name when answering your phone,ie "Good morning, Saint Elizabeth's psychiatric ward, reservations desk, how may I help you?"or similar variations for institutions fro the criminally insane, FBI UFO Reporting Command(with major city name) etc. etc. or as Lily Tomlyn used to do: Hello, is this the party to whom I am speaking? That throws people off! Be creative, have fun with wrong number calls! %D
