really .. it crossed my mind - we all grew up somewhere we will always relate to in a special way ! Good or bad - but the memory of our childhood impregnates us somehow more as we wish to experience ..wink .. still we feel life´s changed in all and every way since then.. freedom seekers out of home - all we where - and now - where we go ?confused Clearing ones mind - before seeking further - never did anyone - any harm either hug kiss

LOL! Only 2?????????? With hair curlers, housecoat over your nightie; florescent pink fuzzy bedroom slippers can of beer(most likely Bud) in one hand and a cigarette in the other leaning in the doorway of your trailer(with flat tires) wearing a surly, snarly expression, mouth/ jaw going 10 miles an hour chewing your gum weighting about 250 pounds; the epitome of the modern day "southern belle" (trailer next to a junkyard,(pick your State). A picture that William Faulkner would envy... %D !!

Hifi, You have written a poem here. A poem of deliverance and of the precarious future. You are at a juncture of life when thoughts and emotions collide. Concern and optimism fight.

It usually works out as you thought, never perfectly, but close to - but you are wise enough to know that.

If that is why you sound so turbulent (not really but for lack of a better word) then always remember we are here for you. For as long as you want there is a room for you and your daughter. Always. I am sure it would be repeated by everybody here.

You are so talented; so industrious; so outward looking; so enterprising. Nothing can stand in your way. You have a thousand of us here behind you. Never forget that. You have the future in front of you - I', sure you will never forget that. You have that little girl always and always and always.

And you have Paolo.

Anytime and always, I speak for my friends too, - if needed, just give us a shout.

love, love, love, love and gratefulness

I hang my head in shame when I think of your courage

Before letting them pick on you, tell them Oslo, that in spite of their ignorance, single mothers get a free residence where to stay, and they have a subsidy to live by, which we Europeans don't have. So if you were living in the USA, life would not be so bad.Enough said this time.

So why was everybody trying to give the impression that being an American was something miserable?

I know that what Oslo said was a joke. What I did not understand was why the scope of the thread to give the impression that Europeans and Americans were living on two different planets. That is the joke that I must have missed.....if it was a joke!!!

antcus, when was the last time you took the back roads into the various trailer parks in "Appalachia", ie. from West Virginia through the Carolinas or into the "deep south", along the Gulf coast...that is another planet. The misery and poverty is, if anything, just as or worse since I first hitch-hiked through the south in the mid 60's and worked through in the 70's, even worse in the large urban centers; the poverty and all the attendant problems just spread further out out into once peaceful and beautiful rural areas...

I understand the stereotypes that most Europeans have of Americans, and many are true. I was born and raised there. However, much of the ignorance that Europeans see is caused by the US's isolation in North America from the rest of the World. The US doesn't have a great deal of people within it's borders that speak a different language (except from Mexico). We cannot travel as easily from one country to another because of the great distances. Even still, many Americans have lost the pioneering spirit we once had as a nation and don't even leave their hometown. As a result, it isn't surprising to me that most have a poor grasp of geography.

However, I suspect there are enclaves within Europe that have the same issues. I have seen poor villages here in Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia. I have met people from England who also cannot speak a foreign language. England is isolated by only a small channel, so why should the US be any different?

Yes Europeans generally are more cosmopolitan, but it doesn't give them the right to look down their noses at nations in other parts of the World. The Americans are the most visible target for this, but Australia and nations of Africa and Asia are in the same situation. Every country is ethno-centric in some ways. Don't judge America by the Jerry Springer show and other such nonsense. Most Americans would like that show to be pulled off the air, because it is disgusting. However there are enough deadbeats at home all day to keep the ratings up so the show is profitable. Perhaps it makes them feel a little better with their lives when they see someone in such a mess.

I am not a blindly loyal person to the US and its culture. Infact, I don't plan to ever live there again. I am just stating a case because I think it is unfair to judge an entire population based on what is seen on television or from one person's account of their travels to an impoverished portion of a nation.
