I can't possibly imagine what it's like to be a soldier. All I can do is keep them in my prayers, thank them for what they are doing and hope to God they make it home safe!
My best friend (my ex boyfriend) is in the Army National Guard, and served in Iraq for ten months.
My Dad is a Vietnam Veteran. He was in the Army and Navy and served in Vietnam. I have alot of other relatives who were in the military, but Dad and my best friend are the ones who've affected me the most.
So to answer your question, no I don't know what it is like to be a soldier, or marine, airman, sailor, coastie, etc. HOWEVER I do know what its like to be a military girlfriend, and a Veterans daughter.

hi everybody and thanks for joining the hopefully banter free thread !
there's a few more questions to add to the list for anybody that chooses to answer any of these questions ( i don't expect any one person to answer more than a couple of these questions at a time
...and i'm in no rush for the answers ....but please don't refer me websites ..because i prefer ' THE CHAT ' )!

18. what makes the best soldiers and leaders in the world ?
19. what does 'the britsh legion do ? ..and when was it set up ?
20 last but not least a question i wanted to know that answer to for a long .....long....... time !
WHAT IS THE GENEVA CONVENTION ?
WHEN WAS IT SET UP ?
AND DO ALL COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD STICK TO IT ?
.......because when ever you watch these old war films with the british prisoner of war officers arguing with their captors the japanese prison officers
they're always saying " what you are doing is breaking the code of the geneva convention "
and thejapaese officer shouting back to the british officer " YOU ARE NOT IN GENEVA "
My son is in the Army and has served in Iraq...thank God he is home safe now. When I asked him why he wanted to do that... he told me it was like my job... there are parts I like about it and parts I don't like. And like me he said... he has a boss giving him orders. I didnt sleep much that 16 months he was gone.
I can. I was in the U.S. Army once. It is a different kind of life. I would have never had the opportunity to go to Germany and to Crete had I not joined. You gotta take orders and do some things you would not do normally but it was a great experience for the most part. Some women like a man in uniform too so that is a plus side. I got to meet some really coll people from all over the world too. Those soldiers from the UK know how to party too. i had many a good driking poarty with them as well as the drinking parties with German troops too.

Cmon Gilly, you started this thread with one question mate now it went from one to twenty, write them down in a new thread as a questionaire and I and all the men and women who were in the forces will answer them the best we can
As for the original question---- I loved being a soldier, was in the army for 15yrs and it was a major part of my life
Quote: and can you imagine coming back from a war like vietnam that nobody was interested in
Yes I can DEFINANTLY imagine that!! I hear about it from my father all the time.
On the flip side, Iraq-- alot of military people don't want thanks for being there. Dexter doesn't. When you go over there to do a job and then you don't really get to to it, or you never see any action, you start thinking "why are you thanking me?" Thats what Dexter, and alot of other people I have spoken to, say.
