It struck me that we have many writers, both published and otherwise, here on CS, as well as a couple of superb editors. So I thought I'd pass along some writing tips sent to me by an editor and friend, in the hopes that we can all become a little better:

Avoid alliteration. Always.

Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.

Avoid cliche's like the plague. (They're old hat.)

Employ the vernacular.

Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc...

Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.

It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.

Contractions aren't necessary.

Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.

One should never generalize.

Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."

Comparisons are as bad as cliche's.

Don't be redundant; don't use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous.

Be more or less specific.

Understatement is always best.

One-word sentences? Eliminate.

Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.

The passive voice is to be avoided.

Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.

Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.

Who needs rhetorical questions?

Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

You are a trip manrolling on the floor laughing If I might pontificate a moment. It is also a good idea to be eloquent in onces text, so as not to flummox those reading said words. Another abtruse way of getting your disissant across, is to emplify such words in such a way, that even the most austere of minds can abstruse. grin Hopefully this, plus what you have shared will help all.thumbs up grin

Looks like I'm breaking a lot of rules, Don...I adore alliterations, often use parenthetical remarks, not usually redundant, but always superfluous, (or loquacious) and, if I'm hanging around the barn, it's NOT to avoid something...or someone (ooohhh, did I say that?wow blushing

Again, GREAT POST.

Delightfully detailed direction. Superb. Just a je ne sais quoi of erudition to whet the appetite and satisfy the demands of political correctness, rather like a menu on a computer screen. I could go on ad infinitum but that would just belabour the point already made so eloquently...by you.
