One of the atrangest features of motherhood is that the vast majority of mothers prefer to cradle their babies in their left arms. Why should this be? The obvious explanation is that the majority of mothers are righthanded and they wish to keep their right hands free. Unfortunately, this explanation cannot apply, because left-handed mothers also favors their left arms for holding their babies.Their precise figures are : 83 percent for right-handed and 78 percent for left handed mothers. The most likely explanation is that the mother's heart is on the left side and, by holding the baby in her left arm, she is unconsciously bringing her infant closer to the sound of the heartbeat. This is the sound that the baby heard when it was inside the mothers' womb and which is therefore associated with peace, comfort, and security.
I think it has to do with the fact that most people are right handed and this keeps the hand free to do other things if necessary....jmo! And I do have a child and I remember doing the same thing!
To be fair on this topic, I did the kangaroo thing. I had a pack that I always carried my babies in. It was a front pack thing. They loved it and it kept my hands free!
I did also. Mainly it was because I was busy, stirring a pot sometimes, during feeding time. This always upset my mom who was afraid I would burn the baby...I never did.
However, to answer Mastic....I fed them from both sides, so size didn't matter. (My ex used to remark that one side was chocolate and one side was vanilla.) The babies didn't care.
I do remember hearing that babies would be comforted by being placed where they could hear the heartbeat. Never knew if it was an old wive's tale or not. I gave them plenty of love and comfort....
