Hi,

Just wanted to know if anyone else love to jog/run for fitness. I do about 4-5 days a week (30 minutes-1 hour; every other day I alternate the distance).

So, how about you?? joy

I have thought about this in the past a few times but I always think of that guy called Jimmy Fix who was really into jogging. I don't recall it doing him much good in the long run so I decided to just stick to cycling 10 miles a day to keep myself fit.

The thing with Jim Fixx was that he was a long time smoker and it had done irrepairable damage to his heart.

I've ran most of my life (junior high and high school), never smoked, and get a physical every other year. So, it depends on your past habits, health, and etc.

Ah right, I didn't realise that's what had happened with his heart.
I thought it was the jogging that had killed him. I didn't even realise he had ever smoked.

Yes, for a long time and he decided to quit and get in shape. Read his book "Running", it tells a little bit about him.

I mean if jogging caused heart attacks, then why wouldn't bike riding, long walks, etc. do the same?? It's all cardio exercise...confused

I don't know. I think jogging is more strenuous than cycling though. IF I run to catch a bus I'm out of breath yet can cycle fairly quickly for ten miles, maybe it's just me. How people can run 25 mile marathons I could never know, they must be super fit.

Well, it's hard to start running a little later in life. But people have done it and have succeeded. I haven't done a marathon, but I've done a few 5K's and 10K's (3 miles and 6 miles). That's my limit.

Running a marathon takes a lot of work and determination and patience.

Yes, it could be just you. Not every exercise is right for everyone. Cycling is right for you. But to another person it may not be the right workout program for them. Not everyone can run, so they have to find something that works better for them.

But cycling is excellent exercise too. That's great that you are up to 10 miles. Have you ever tried a 20-30 miler?? Have you ever been a participant in a cycling race?

Noo, I've never been in a cycling race. never done more than 10 miles either, doubt my bike would last out for more than 10 miles at once. It's one of those 25 year old racer types laugh

There's a cycling club near me though and some of the people are in their late 60s and think nothing of cycling 30 miles in one go. I think they've been doing it all their lives though. Really slim and sprightly they are and their bikes are great too. The new racer type bikes with superslim tyres. Their bikes are really light to pick up too, can't weigh very much at all.

Well, you can get there too, you know! It just takes some work, determination, and a goal. Try that club. You'll meet a lot of great people and make new friends.
