ah now I understand, I think!

My culture confuses me every day because I travel and work and get immersed in different cultures all the time. I have to adapt to strange customs and accept them....as culture. You could say, I don't really have my own culture anymore and that's fine by me, makes me more tolerant.

How would you describe your culture Cristina?

My culture is:

-Study;

-Buying my own food, i share a house with 2 people, but buying my own food is better;

-I get pissed of when a teacher keeps on talking over the break time...i can interrupt him if he is distracted;

-I like speaking with my mouth and not with my hands;

-My room is a great mess...i like the stress of being late, i do that even when i have exames.Last week i had one, i was not sure where it was due to take place, i left home 20 minuts before, stop a girl, luckily she was going to the same place, we only had 15 mints biking quickly! That was horrible...but the winer sensation is wonderful
laugh

-I love getting 10 mints late...when there is no prejudice on that...when people just love getting on time just to stress me and because they have stuff to do...i get pissed!rolling on the floor laughing laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh

-When my aunt calls me and tell me she needs to detail her problems, i don't want to hear, cause it's been the same problems all these years= it's everybodies fault but hersyawn

-I don't go to church

-When i go to Mozambique, i don't like the neighbour knocking the door to see me...i just hide myself;

-My aunts and uncles are of a large number...i'm glad they are not expecting me to be around...maybe because of them being a lot, i want to restrict my conception of family...

-I've always gymmed, not now...

-When people die in Mozambique, the cerimony sometimes extends to...the "talking" of the death person. As life continues after death, the family get together with a "sheik" or so...do some african magic,he-the sheik incorporates the death person and starts asking what must be done...and, don't you dare to disobey the will of a death person!
This is a very funny cerimony, where children cry or fart of so much laughter...
When was the last time i've attended such cerimony?We are allowed to be rebels when we grow up

-grin

- Christmas? I was educated to go to church as catholic...now it's a family or friends family's reunion...eat and eat...

- New years eve? Always noise parties, the door opens for everyone to great everyone and party wherever you want.You are almost allowed to enter wherever you want, the only limitation is the space...there are better parties of course.When it's full, you can close the door, no more free food or dance!

-My last new years eve in Mozambique was 3 years ago, at a beach...just gorgeous and normal there.But...i don't really care about new years eve anymore...maybe because where i've been, the doors are closed?rolling on the floor laughing laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh rolling on the floor laughing

Oh well...i guess basicly this is my culture! Please ask more questions about my culture if you wish!wink drinking

Very interesting, but what you describe isn't really culture but life, Some aspects of life are the same regardless of where your roots are.

so what is culture then if not your way of life?

There are a lot of segments in every society.

You want to know about the very traditional way of living of mozambicans? There are a lot of ways of living, it's a big country.But my way of life, had always been like the way i've discribed yougrin

Ah, i'm remembering one funny thing...when my breasts were starting to appear, my mother woke me up around 5 in the morning, before the sun was up, and she asked me to bend in front of the front door so she could sweep them away!rolling on the floor laughing laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh they do that when the girl is too young in order to avoid boys chasing us!laugh That was a serious moment!laugh rolling on the floor laughing laugh

-When i got my first period, my naughty aunt said- "when you need birth control pills, i can get them for you", i was 12doh

That's a difficult question Cristina. I don't think anybody ever loses their cultural roots but if you have to live in another country you have to adapt and immerse yourself in the new culture. If not, you can't survive or be accepted.

As an English teacher, language for me is the first thing I try to understand, for example, British English is so polite, use of modals constantly, i.e could, would, etc. We say 'could you pass me....?' whereas in Spanish they say 'Dame.....' which translates as 'give me....' It's not being impolite but appears so to native English speakers.

Roles of women differ too, so I have to change my social behaviour depending on where I am. In the UK it's acceptable for a group of women to go out in the evening and drink wine. In Spain, women who drink wine, other than with a meal, are viewed as alcoholics (you can drink as much spirits as you like though!) and here in Russia, it's just not acceptable for women to go out at all in the evening without a man. Remember though, I don't live in ex-pat Spain where the culture remains British through and through. There are few British people living in Murcia city centre, it's totally Spanish, thank goodness! But that also means I have to speak and live Spanish.

I don't wish to offend my hosts in other countries , so even though I may not agree, I accept.

That's natural.You must respect and integret into the rules of the house that hosts you, otherwise it will be a bit hard for them to understand or accept you...yeah.

In Portugal was the other way around for me. I head to learn to say excuse me and i'm sorry all the time. When my purse touches another, you are suppose to appologise,imagine when you slightly touch a person! So there, it is a constant "excuse me", "i'm sorry"...and there's even a general appologies at the end, such as: "i'm sorry for anything "or "sorry for any small thing"- this includes all the possible uncovenience you've causeslaugh doh

I always say thank you to my mozambican friend after talking one hour on the phone...and she thinks it's completely weird and stupid, cause friends are friends...why thanking because he heard or called me?rolling on the floor laughing laugh rolling on the floor laughing

Maybe that's why some keep themselves in colonies, so they can keep doing their stuff and don't even bother with learning the language, communicating with the natives.
Yeah, it makes you tolerant to try to integrate into the country that hosts you.

My dutch friend says she can't figure out what is it to be dutch...beside the bikes...conversing

scold Well this is an interesting conversation..

I am a musician - a folksinger - Am working in the musicians union..

Through the years I have meat many people - who are trying to explain and define "what culture is"..

Of course there is a bit of culture in the evryday life - parts of evryday life parts of what we do, have roots in our culture..

But the growing commercialism in evrything - is "cultures" biggest enemy.

Part of a peoples culture, is knowing and understanding why we behave as we do. It is also to know the past - because evryone builds the future on the past, no matter what.. When politicians beginns to "burn" the books - wich also was done here in Europe - in a not so long ago past, it is a deep sighn - they need a better foundation in culture.

When politicians are afraid of the immigrants - it is also a warning - that they lack an insight of their own culture, or worse - has failed to know it at all, and therefore are afraid of the unknown..

Is entertaiment culture - no.. Entertaiment is just for have the time passing by as smooth as possible, without askin questuions.

I can go on and on with this, because it is one of the biggest questions of all times.. And possibly never find the compleete answers...

Please forgive me - for my spelling.. I am not an English native. I am from Denmark - a country where "we" really again need to find our culture. . .

i hear you dear.

How will you find your culture again?

importing other ways of living makes our culture go away right?Everyone wants to be internationally accepted.So, there has been an internationalization of all cultures.Our own cultures are becoming exotic to our own eyes.But that's the result of fusions...sad?Do you think then this is why people are scared of immigrants?Immigrants get into your house and bring their culture by TV too!laugh

Tell me you don't have James Oliver cook book...which in itself, brings other cultures!

What is a culture of peoples......?

First off, people is the plural of a person.

Then we get the culture. Culture is something that grows around people.

So a culture of peoples I think would be where you take a big petri dish, fill it with a warm solution, and put peoples into it, and wait for them to grow, and then you will get a culture of peoples. Like a vacine type of thing? You would need a sterile laboratory for this experiment.reindeer dancing reindeer

dancing santa waving Hoi Cristina ! Did you have a nice Christmas DAy? We missed you!... so silent here on the Forums, just the few left behind ones, like me..... They keep me here to do the cooking...christmas cool

Serious though... what is culture? I think of it as the basic roots one is brought up in/with. Like us here now in CH, everyone here does their celebrating of Christmas on Christmas Eve, opening gifts, eating a feast (oh, which is the Traditional Food here of Raclette or Fondue) .. whereas we seem to stick to the way we grew up with in the South .... Christmas morning for gifts, and our family traditional meal of roasted meat with lots of vegs, trifle puddiing....and as much of the family as is available, plus any lonely friends.

Living here we have adopted the local tradition ... just this year we had no kitchen so opted for just ONE gathering/meal on Christmas day ... too much chaos on the Eve to do much.santa waving

sigh How I will find my own culture again - I know I will not - because it is gone - and changed into a "non culture" - Where the rules are ruling, where you believe much more in what you look for in a big warehouse - where books are seldom, because they are too long to read - .. Even though there are printed quiet a lot.

When I look around and open my eyes I feel sad - and I feel just sad - when I hear people talk on the streets ..

And why did this happend ?? - Not easy, but my guess is: Because narrow-minded city-people have taken over the lot..

Earlier on, journalists also came from people in the countryside - and they had to travell - to come to the City - to do their job .. But each little place had its own culture . . So they had a lot of different aspects carried with them..

When you don't have to open your eyes - but just sit in front of your PC - get your news from the internet, and you are not living in the places you write about - well what happends ???

Today, evry one has to fit in a little box - and there aren't that many boxes to fit in.. Well it speeks for it selves, what happends.

But in a society like we have today, the people who govern oyr country - they cannot govern IF there'd be too many different small boxes.. Another aspect is, the political correctness - that rules..

If you are on an interwiev on TV - your are judged as a allmost a maniac - if you don't give the right answers - I mean the answers wanted... IF you question that, the carpet will be drawn away under your feet - very quickly..

And why I know - have tried it myself. And our colleeges where forbidden to say something on TV or in the Radio - if we could not answer with just one sentence, because mostly - you cannot rekognize your own thoughts afterwoods... Is that Freedom of speech - the freedom we are praising so high - ?? Please think about this last a long time before answering ??

I know I will not find the culture again .. in MY time !

I really felt sad reading your thoughts.But I don't think Culture can ever really get lost.And I am sure you can find it again. Its not something which can get lost for good, it might be that we forget our culture for some time but it exists. Your country and my country and any country exists because of this culture,even if all the pc, tv and all the society really neglect it, deny it and make us believe that it does not exist. Whatever you do, it includes some of this culture. I think in any country you can find places where you find tradition and its a part of our culture.I wish you will find something that makes you believe that there is culture in your country as well as it it here in Greece and everywhere

i think i was trying to say that culture is not the same as modus vivendi, otherwise it would be easy to loose it! You live according to the conditions, way of living of the host country.You may not do the ritual of your culture the way you do in your home country because the conditions are different. I remember i have a friend who is muslum, but in Portugal, she's been eating porc and say sssssssssssssshhhhhhhhht! So, maybe she is gaining the modus vivendi of other people but...she didn't really loose hers?confused

When you say...british culture...what does that encompasses that is way different to Iraland culture?
Is culture all about folklore?Who wants that then?
