Dripping with Anticipation ( Archived) (7)

One night while surfing the world wide Web
I saw a funny name that said
"Dripping with Anticipation"
How this stirred my imagination
Could this be the one I thought
or will this lead again to naught
I mustn't let myself be fooled
My ardor must be quickly cooled
But if she is the one I seek
Then surely I must not be meek

I say hello and ply my charms
one day she may be in my arms
Through twists and turns our words unwind
I never thought that I would find
the woman that I saught so long
it feels too right, it can't be wrong
we talk for hours well into the night
til sunrise fills my room with light
must say goodbye but I just can't do it
if she doesn't return I'll know I blew it

The hours pass til the sun goes down
she doesn't come back and I can only frown
was it something I said that scared her away?
should I sit here for another day?
Hours turn to days and days become weeks
I cruise the chatrooms with the rest of the geeks
Maybe I'll see her flirting with some one
but she's not there and I talk to no one

A month goes by and finally I get
a letter from a guy I've never met
it's her cousin and he hates to inform me
the news that we are not to be
with careful words that fill me with dread
he tells me that my Lori is dead

Very nice, but most unsettling. Makes me wonder, though, and perhaps that was your intention.

Words have power and when carefully assembled together they can become more powerful than the sum of their parts.

Stripped of a lot of detail this poem is actually a true story of a woman I met one night in a chat room several years ago. We became online lovers but before we had a chance to meet she was diagnosed with cervical cancer which had already spread throughout her body. Out of caution I guess, she gave me a bogus address. I found this out upon writing and having my mail come back stamped "Not known at this address". Before she went into the hospital she changed all her passwords. Her sister knew about me but had no way of contacting me. After she was MIA for about 3 weeks I resent the letter to a PO box she gave me and that got through. A week later I got an email from her cousin.

Yes, I had a very strong feeling that this was based on something real in your life. What gave it away for me was that you used a name...you said "my Lori"...sounded much more real than if you had said "my lover" or "my woman" or some nameless endearment.
Sorry for the loss.

At first I did use "my loved one" but decided to personalise it by using her name. I ended the poem abruptly to signify the absolute finality of death. When a life ends the story ends and all that remains is epilogue.

Thank you for the hug

I spent a long time on this poem with many revisions and changes til I was happy with it. I hope you liked it even though it ended on a sad note.
