How do you explain to a 3 year old kid what horizontal and vertical looks like and what it means?
According to my daughter's kindergarten teacher, she's supposed to know this already. I have tried to explain it to her last night, but I could see it confused her. Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks Spicey, it makes sense. The thing is , she's only 3 and although she likes to scribble on paper and knows how to hold a pen, I can't expect her to draw a straight line horizontally or vertically, but apparently she's supposed to.
If you can teach her flash cards of H & V, she will pick it up. Make big ones & have her trace the letters with her finger. Another trick is to use the number of lines in each letter to mimic the number of syllables in each word.
I-I ..hora zon tul \ / .. ver tical
This stuff works, I promise. I had a 3 yr reciting her vowels before she even knew her abc's. It's all about creating little tricks & games for them. They fill in the rest.

and good morning to you too........
Well I would have, but when she spoke to me, she made it quite clear that it was my job to teach her this stuff. I don't mind doing it, but the main reason why I've put her in kindergarten was because I'm working full time and want someone to look after her and ensure that she has no shortcomings whether it be food, friends, education, etc when I'm at work

Thanks Alainn.......I thought it would be easy, but apparently not. I have spent almost an hour with her yesterday, making her draw line after line, which was a mistake as they get bored quite easily.
NP. Hope some small part of it helps. I know you can do it. :)
On a side note, a teacher's job includes helping the parent. If this teach has issues giving you pointers so your child can succeed, I'd have to make a point of it with her Supervisor. I put my fosters in the Montessori Academy & I'll be damned if I would have allowed any teacher to speak to me like that. If she couldn't offer you some help in achieving this "goal", perhaps she needs to be reminded of the definition of "teacher".
She is still a baby but remember that you live in a town where all kids are pushed to the limit of their capabilities and is never allowed to develop at their own pace.
Don't go that route - let her question and discover at her own pace. She has an intelligent mom and is bound to become a highly developed, intelligent young woman without any pushing but with lots of love and attention.
I don't doubt that you are a fantastic mom, however, there seems to be a little hi phalooting happening in that teacher's head.
I certainly do not know many children who know the words horizontal and vertaical at the age of three. If that teacher believes it to be a standard, then have her meet her own standard and teach...
