It sucks doesnt it rilly..since being on here and reading so much about the use of those special chosen words..i myself now pay more attention when I use it. I have found that I have different level and kinds of love...so when I say it, I do mean it..if its to my girl friends I mean it that I do love em, which is taken at point value...when I say it to guys its a whole diff concept...if i say it in any form from love you, luv you, love ya, to all my love and all the diff ways of spelling or saying it...for me it means I do love that about you, theres a part of you I adore, or i do love you but probably not the love of an everlasting intimiate relationship...but as a friend and I know guys dont that term and nor do women but to love a friend and let the relationship build is great..to stay in the lovin friend zone is hard, but isnt it better then not having the person at all???? (off subject sorry)
To actually say I love you or type it....thats something diff to me, but if I say it to someone there will be no question of my feelings it will be apparent..i make sure of that.
I can completely understand all the confusion wrapped up in those words and how are men suppose to take it..as face value or a term of causal endearment or is it something more...my apologizes for us making life and love more confusing then it needs to be....well i have confused myself so i will let it go from here...

I have noticed when I'm with my buddies in the USA.. when I'm talking on the phone or leaving or whatever.. they say 'Luv ya' and I always think HUH?
In England most people don't do that.. we say 'I love you'.. because we DO.. if that makes sense... and only to our closest people, people we DO 'love' .. we don't do that 'Luv ya buddy' .. thing.
Also some ladies use it as a sign off on the phone or in a note in a way that means nothing more than saying by.
it's a good job you don't live in the UK..here when you go into a store a female assitant that you have never even seen before will almost always call a man - hun, love, sweet, sugar, baby....etc

Hmmm.. not sure I explained that very well..
I have noticed that about English people...
English people sometimes get critised for their reserve... but I like it.. I see it as a sign of sincerity.. u tend to only bother if you actually genuinely like a person... Irish people (and I don't want to critisise my own ) are very chatty and friendly and will be amiable to everybody.. but I think people on the grand scheme of things can be a bit more disposable to them..
I don't know if any of that makes sense.. anyway English people are cool

I don't ever say it unless I mean it. I've told relatives that I love them (parents, grandparents, my boys)....but I don't use it in everyday conversation. Now if I'm writing a letter I will close it with "love"... if it's someone I'm in a relationship with then they'd get an "all my love" (like on a card)....but closing emails on here & other places I don't use it...I'll use "laters" or "nite" or "cya".......SO...If I use "love" you'll know I mean it as LOVE....lol
I think you have to consider the context...and the woman. If I tell a man that I love him, it is in a way that he KNOWS is just for him and means he holds my heart in every way and I only want to be with him. There is no way he could confuse that with the way I say "I love you" to my daughter or my dad when I hang up the phone.

Then if a woman tells you "I love you." or such and she means more...we guys are often left with a wondering.
We then appear dumb if we don't follow up on it or we make a fool of ourselves.....
worse of all is if we hurt the lady's feelings because of our confusion.
