gangel: Do you think there is no need to speak more than one language, your own?? I for one like to learn languages.By learning a different, unknown language, you discover and explore the nation, the richness, the uniqueness of its whole culture with its peculiarities.
Yes learning more than our own is nice. But not all schools's do that. My high school had 2 languages but the the high school my duaghter will be going to has 12 different language courses.

I would like to be able to speak more than one language. I tried to study Spanish in school, but I have forgotten most of it. Can you teach an old dog new tricks?

For me, languages don't come easy. But since I really enjoy traveling, I always try to learn phrases in the language of the country I'm going to. It just seems polite/courteous. Europeans are much better at it then we are. The US covers such a vast territory and everyone (or most) speak english. Can you imagine what a change it would be if every state spoke their own language?

I think it's important to at least try to learn some if you are visiting another country. Prior to my 2 year stay in Azerbaijan I was taught the basics. Difficult at first but it was really worth the effort. The residents appreciated the fact I was at least trying and they even put up with me during the times when I butchered the hell out of their language. If nothing else, it made me much more appreciative and understanding of those using english as a 2nd language.

I think its good to learn other languages. We Maltese are thought Maltese and English from when we are toddlers. We then have a choice of other languages in our schools. I can speak three languages, Maltese, Italian and English. I also have a working knowledge of French.

StressFree: lol....once when I was in Spain for a little visit, I thought some dude was speaking some odd language to my friend. I asked my friend what language the dude was speaking....he said English....the dude was from Scotland.....
Other than English, I can speak Swedish and a bit of Spanish. I have no urge to learn any other languages after trying to get down my Swedish in the flowing fluent....
What do you say if you hear my French and my Dutch friends are speaking English, you won't believe that is English
