Computer technology is moving so fast that Microsoft is planning on not making any more OP-systems, "Windows". So I would guess that in the near future, every system will be a web-based interface.
gentlepaws: I agree. I just got a new PC and bought some programs. Some of my favourite programs that I've been running for years were infected, I just found out.
well it works for the big companies ot have you needing virus software and other crap . Personally I use none, thats right NO virus software and dont get infected... I have a router and thats all.
95% of viruses come in emails (usually forwarded or piccie mails) and from downloading "free" stuff online.
Ask yourself who best interest is served in you getting viruses?
Virus software also slows down your comp, using resources ...

dont kid yourself Paws
Windows 7 (formerly known as Blackcomb and Vienna) is next.
they make OS's every few years, so that everyone has to upgrade, its marketing genius. In fact they probably already have Windows 12 on the go.

Gates wont give up that money!!
You got that right and they even have all the data for selling patches to correct the 'undetected problems' before manufacture. They knew. They also knew how to patch it before manufacture, but they know we'll take their word that they didn't know and shell out more money for the patch so we can keep up with every body else. Some times it really makes me sick.

My reference to Microsoft was from a press release yesterday.
CjTenorSax: Sometimes the press releases are to generate sales. If people think they'll be stuck, then they hurry up to buy and not be left behind.
try reading some other technical reviews, magazines and stuff like that. Often the higher end companies are let in on new developments or to test possible future releases long before the general public is told what is actually going to happen.

i think they are trying to distance themselves psychologically from the "windows" logo, aura ...because of the "ads" that Apple is running and the comments people make about windows.
They have generations of OS ready to hit the market as soon as sales peak on the current OS software.
They are like most big companies, smoke and mirrors.
For instance: The current standard for HD TV's is now 1080i (resolution) Two years ago Sony already had 1956i res ready for market. Thats twice the current resolution of the best HD TV today. That was 2 years ago, so they probably have better now. thing is they hold their new tech's back until sales peak and begin a downward spirral, then they introduce, not the best, but the 'next' best generation, which has few but not all of the best possible advances. Maximizing profit, so we have to rebuy new every few years to keep up.
So Sony puts out ads sayng they have the best on the market? well they have better but you wont see it for years and so does MS ... the Windows Brand name may be on its way out but you can bet MS and theor OS department isn't. unless they've made a deal with Apple possible too...

So well put in a nut-shell. Corporations see us as sheep, and for the most part, sheep we are.
