You can still be nice, but you have to learn to stand up for yourself, and not be their doormat. You have to say what is unacceptable to you and stick to it, and if they don't like it they can hit the door. I have been there and got used as a rug, but not anymore.
So many bad ones do go after the nice ones, it's not right. But the nice ones are easy targets for users and abusers.
