When we see someone who is down from past experience and we offer a hand to lift them up, the most selfish thing to do is expect anything in return. It is easy to confuse thank you with I need you at times, but it does not make it right to do so.
We should be happy that our effort no matter how great or small has helped someone to regain their own footing. The world is a treacherous place at times and the last thing any of us needs is to take a hand that will not let go or worse will bite if the hand pulls away.
There is no expectation in helping someone, and this is a key element to true friendship.
The hole we see in others who are suffering from loss cannot be filled with ourselves, it can only be filled with that person and by that person. In helping someone find some part of themselves we may in turn find part of ourselves, and in doing so make the world a better place for all.
