I owe a considerable amount of money to the county but have no current support order nor do I owe my ex wife anything. The amount we are talking about exceeds 40.000 dollars and I am facing jail time because I am unemployed . I used to be an electrician and made pretty good money. The state of Calif decided that taking my drivers license away after becoming unemployed would be a good way to keep me paying my support but succeeded only making the matter worse.
Without a drivers license and being an electrician made it virtually impossible for me to get a job in my field and all the jobs that I applied for required me to have a license. To compound matters my mother fell ill and required to live with her and take care of all that she was incapable of doing.. Three years have passed and now another requirement in california to be an Electrician is certification. To be certified you must have had threee years of employment with steady work.
80% of the money the county wants is interest that accrued over the years and now they want to lock me up.
What to do . Any real suggestions thanks

I'll probably be in jail by wednesday Oct 15

I'm a bit confused. You say you can't get a job without a license, but when you had your license, you didn't have a job. I may not be a good one to be responding to your thread as I have an ex who's currently in jail for being so far behind on his support. dancing

because he doesn't have a job, he should live in a box??confused

it seems to me that he is willing to work and pay, but that things have been put in the way of this.? If i lost my job tomorrow, the internet is not the first thing i woudl cut back on , for my sanity, and not least because the 'net is a rich source of job opportunities!

I don't know...is there any way you can reach a deal with the State to pay sooooooooo much per month??? I would also look at a change in career...maybe there are some retraining programs in your area!!!!!

The county is not a say all or all powerful force...........
first....... how have they established you are the father and that you owe support?

second, take it to court, judge will consider circumstances, where the county wont.

third....... you should have taken it to court long ago........ with change in income... they would have lowered the support amount.

I have a daughter whose going through this with 3 kids in school one a senior.I read ur profile.Your kids are grown.U let ur wife raise the childen,How?Did she work? Or did the tax payer pay to raise ur kids.U also dont say how many children u have,But I would think this is not a right now thing,so u would have had to not paid for a lot of yrs.I also went through this and raised my daughter put her through high school. At the time I wasnt skilled at anything but being a house wife.So I did it by cleaning houses.SO SORRY I have no sympathy for u at all ,My sympathy is with ur ex and the Children, who if they feel like my g-kids just dont believe Dad loves them. barf

I agree with much of what you said..I too am raising 3 kids alone. The childsupport was finally raised earlier this year, as before they were only getting $209.00 a month for all 3.
To be behind that much money in only a few years, too crazy and dont buy it. Sorry the troubles your having, but am also sorry that the mother has had to raise the children without any income from you...dunno

Sorry all, I see both sides of this.

Married twice...........I paid support faithfully to my second wife with triplets.
however..... law is nasty when it comes to women paying support.
I raised my son from my first Marriage..alone, and never got one penny.
sure as hell the state would not make her pay.

So I was raising my son and paying support on 3 at the same time....try living on that income.

very mad very mad very mad

So I was raising my son and paying support Oooh I bet, cause Missouri charges a lot towards child support,
I only got $172 dollars for 3 kids in Oklahoma.
My brother-n-law in Missouri paid over $500 for two kids, and had to pay for medical insurance for them.

You know California takes away your DL for DUIs, Reckless Driving and not having insurance or having too many points on your driving record. It doesn't happen for no reason so I think you should get a criminal lawyer especially if you are facing jail time. Not having representation got you into this spot, having a good lawyer will get you out of it. (Spoken as the daughter of a dam* good retired trial attorneylaugh ) People hate lawyers until they need one. Get the best you can afford!
