Why do they not fit a DSL modem in the laptops instead of just a fax/modem?? I mean, we did move on from the 56k a while ago. It's really nothing else then a network interface anyway.
And what would be the use of this???
When there is a powercut, the laptop would still be online.

not a bad idea at all.
but modems are still built-in due to the fact that laptops are meant to be portable. some people take them abroad with them and need a modem to connect to the internet, and in some places its easier to get a dial-up connection than an ADSL one, even though locally dial-up is on the way out, if not demised completely.
ok, I'know, some hotels provide a wifi connection, that's why a wireless card is in built in the laptop!

Yes quite agree
But my understanding is that you more often find a telephone socket for dial up than a adsl point, so they decided to keep the good old dial up modem for use when adsl was not available.
But I am sure the next Generation of laptops will have built in dsl modem and dial up
