Human languages typically portray grammatical distinctions to the listener between honorific and colloquial language. These distinctions may be grammatically encoded by a regular system of verb and noun affixes. In Japan for example, language is used to show respect between children and parents or between husband and wife In body language
Human cultures have varied ways of showing respect by bodily actions. In many European cultures, people shake hands. In others, such as in Japan people bow at the waist when meeting. Frequently, gender is a factor in how respect is displayed in bodily behavior. For example, women in many Western cultures traditionally curtsy, whereas men bow.
Military
As a sign of respect in almost any form of the military is a salute. A salute is used by enlistees to show respect to officers (and vice-versa; to not return a salute to a subordinate is considered offensive) and by officers to those of higher rank. The 21-gun salute is done within the military for funerals of military members and for high-ranking civilians such as the President.
In organized crime
Some organized crime syndicates, both real and fictional, revolve heavily around the theory of respect. Hired men and those lower in the rank of the family are obligated to show "respect" to the mafioso. Crimes of revenge
There are many cases in which perceived disrespect has led to murder and other violence.

Respect is being able to show consideration for someone, to listen and have the ability to recognise that someone may be able to pass on the benefit of their experience, without prejudging them, be they a child or a learned scholar.
To earn respect is more that just telling someone what to do. Its being able to demonstrate that you can also carry out that request. The sign of a true leader
Respect is something that I have been raised with, it was intilled in me at an early age...
It is there, I display, it, not all would agree, but it is there, always, it dribbles away with some people, sometimes, with others it increases.
But it is always there.
I do not believe that it should be earned. The only thing I earn is my salary....And a stiff drink at the end of hard day.
I think there are different kinds of respect i too was bought up to respect others as individuals, my elders, different viewpoints, cultures, religions etc. But throughout my career i think i had to earn the respect of my staff and colleagues through my ability, skills and knowledge.
