ghost007: hhmm what are you trying to say here that we all exist in so far as other people perceive us is this the old "if a tree falls in a forest and no one heres it fall did it really fall?"

maybe - or maybe it's just me asking if the reason we get a bad conscience is that we are scared we might get caught.

I sympathise completely......i used to trust people uncondtionally when i was younger ..then when life really kicked in ...i started to trust no one,,,,,but then you realise that you cant live like that ....in order to live you have to take leaps of faith and believe .......the act in itself makes us alive ..otherwise you start to die..so now .....i still remain suspicious but sometime i just behave really stupidly and i leap ... help yay yay bouquet

Ah, finally someone who said what I was waiting for:

italic "they deserve the chance to live out their lifes"

Thats what I have been told conversing way back when I asked my mum, while watching Titanic on telly.

Well, maybe only SOME creatures, human OR animal have this instinct - in different doses of strength?

Some parents neglect their children, and some parents protect their children.

Some animals do the same - actually most animals do this - with only a few aberations.

I used to observe the animals on my farm - concerning this instinct, and it was fascinating! How a mother hen protected not only her own chickens, but ANY small chickens - almost fearlessly - facing up to a predator with the certain (?) knowledge that she would not survive - but she just naturally proceeded to protect the little ones first? And the Roosters would do the same to protect the Hens!

...... and then I saw my little Jack Russell female guard her young against another dog about 20x her size with absolute ferociousness and terrible fear regardless of the outcome - as long as her pups were behind her, and safe. ... Yet another female would have no interest in her pups, happily handing them over to another to feed and nurture....... Much the same as some humans?

I`ve known of parents who`ve tried to save their children from drowning in the sea - uselessly - as they all drowned in the end. But they obviously could not just stand and watch their kids being carried out to sea.

Our base instinct, I think, is to nurture our young and the weak, and to protect them. But some of us are cowards and fail to do this. Being human, we are not perfect? Even some animals are not "perfect".

Yes children do have the fundamental right to live out there lives, or at least to the point of adulthood when they are also faced with a similar situation. Please note irony plays a wistful game.

As for the old text book quote of natural instinct of survival it’s somewhat out dated. Too much comfortable living & disposable lifestyle has stripped many of the survival instinct, and certain Huxley would be laughing in his grave saying … I told you so.

As for the process of natural of selection, yes we do have a degree of control concerning the process of our survival, but at the end of the day nature holds the balance of power for that final decision.

I look at it like this.

Of course children deserve to have their life.

But, I do see this.

When we are on a plane, who should put the oxygen mask on first?

Not the children.

Us, the adults.

Why?

If we all perished, who, would help them?
