I am writing a story about a bunch of people who didn't know each other, who all exchanged personal information like phone numbers. One of them used the numbers to reverse search and get all the addresses. He was actually an imposter. Each time one of them announced they were going on a trip, he coordinated with other people in that town to rob the houses.
They returned from their vacations to find only the couch and nothing else.

Could be, but don't you guys call those folks trailer-park trash? My character is not interested in trailer-park trash, they take their whole house with them.
This is just a new twist on an old scam... but still a scary thought. It reinforces the need to be very careful about how much information you give out about yourself. And we all wonder why it's so difficult to actually make a connection with someone that we have "met" online? This scenerio insinuates that close friendships have been formed, trust is being given to someone that we believe is a true friend without remembering that the cyber world allows for an easy make believe reality.
I never tell chat buddies about my plans until AFTER I come back... but then that is how I also am in the real world except for a select few.
internet chat is never safe really. untill you actually get to know that guy or gal really well . but it is never safe to give out anything to anyone. no matter what it is . i have heard the saying many times its ok they are trust worthy. but they are not.some have no care for you or how much harm they cause you as long as they get what they want from you and they will go to any lengths to get it.
Like the idea but spice it up ... make your character use their empty houses for all sorts of illicit activities and they return ta find things like police waiting ... dead bodies ... homes trashed from the raves he threw there .... thieves are just so .... errr ... common <G>

Well I just mentioned it because I keep reading all these threads where people reporting that they are leaving for a day, or a week. More or less as a warning to all you guys! Thx for the advise. Especially the last and the Lion-woman ;-)

I was starting to wonder if I was being a bit paranoid to not want to chat with anyone by phone yet, or give out more personal info (like real name) even to people (supposedly) in another country. I think you have to trust your instincts.
