i can't really answer your questions gilly but there is a house just down the road from me that definitely has some strong presence . the people that got it won't go in there anymore well their son will but not alone anywa ill let you know if it batteries run out tho

Well ghost is used as a generic blanket term by most really covering many different things, if you ask somone to name a word for a ghost you might get spirit apparition spectre ect, but all are different forms and often very different to experience. example an apparition that is just seen is different to a poltergiest which has a physical impact on its surroundings.
I'm a bit rusty on this at the moment so i'd have to get all the old books out for more information.
As far as i know the length of time a "ghost" stays depends on why it is there and if anything is done about it.

To add...many stay due to a sudden, traumatic death in the place where they're found...their home, a prison, etc. Apparently most don't actually realize that they're dead, and those who do need closure. Mediums and other sensitives can help them by letting them know it's OK to move on. Not everybody sees them because you really have to be open to and sensitive to their presence for this. I can't see them, but I can feel them, and I'm beginning to get to the point of seeing some by working on the ability. We do all have it, we just need to develop it.
Others stay near their loved ones and use things like lights, TV's, and computers to let them know that they're nearby...or touch. Touch is the one I perceive most from my loved ones, or any other spirits that happen to be in the area.

Something i just thought of too, many people say the "ghost" looked completly normal untill it walked through something or just disapeared so they may be all around a lot more than people would think, they just aren't being seen doing anything unusual most of the time.

The lights have never flickerd or the TV has never turned off and on. One time the kids and I got into a heated conversation and I left the house and started walking to cool down. A steak of lightening flasked across the sky over my family home (my brother owns now). Of course I quickly returned home. That was the only lightening that evening.
