The US is facing the worst set of crises it has in a century, and I wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone what the fundamental strength of our Nation has always been. That is our diversity united in a single purpose.
We may not all agree on things, either politically or religiously, we may often disagree to the point of working at cross-purposes, and I think it is at those times we need to be reminded of what the metaphor of a melting-pot truly represents.
to amalgamate: To merge, to combine, to blend, to join.
Thus, in thinking of our culture as an alloy, a single thing created from several, often diverse, elements, we must address one of the primary properties often associated with alloys; that of its superiority in terms of strength, durability, flexibility, and quality in comparison to its constituent parts alone. So, I ask you, fellow Americans, to set aside your ideological differences, for they are not what makes this country strong. It's the similarities that bind us, the need for freedom, happiness, and prosperity. We cannot succeed alone, for our strength is of such lower quality divided rather than when it is combined.
We have undergone hardships in the past, and like all things, things have changed, and prosperity once again became our fate. In those times, we came together as a single people determined to succeed. We can do it once again, for the nature of the mixture might have changed, but the qualities of an alloy with the aforementioned goals at heart has not. Together we shall win, divided we shall fall.
Please keep this in mind. My fondest wishes for you all, worldwide, and to the universe as a whole. Namaste!

Exactly T - we need to keep this as a worldwide objective - we are all going through stuff individually at the moment, as countries and as people be we mustnt ever lose sight of the bigger picture - we are ultimately all in this together
Hmmmmmm I thought they were trying to change that whole "melting pot" idea to a "salad"... where each ingredient maintains it´s individuality but when mixed together creates something beyond each ingredient...
yes... I´m being a little tongue in cheek here but I believe this is the new "politically correct" version....

I don't care what is politically correct. I was raised with the melting pot concept during the integration of our schools. This is the right way to think, at least to me...a melting pot concept denotes something strong to me, like steel...salad...gets eaten...
very well said, i hope many people read this thread, i know it is aimed in general to us in the US, but the message could be picked up by everyone, like thomas freedman says, "the world is flat" we're all in this together and should see ourselves as one world community, for it is true what you say, united we stand, divided we fall. good post.

I´m of two minds on this... I love cultural diversity and hate to see that lost in the melding process... it´s one of the things I love about living in Europe and really hope that the EU doesn´t change it.
When I lived in the States I had a lot of ethnic friends and loved going to their homes for dinner, experiencing their traditions re: weddings, holidays etc.... I would hate to see people loose their heritage in the process of becoming an American.
At the same time... I do believe that to become a citizen you should be able to read and write in the native language and reduce the cost of printing all govt documents and paperwork in 20 different languages... and respect the laws of the country you live in.

That was also awesome...and I agree with your original post, GB. United we stand, divided we fall...and we've been very divided lately. It's time to become united again. And to try to unite the world. We have a planet to fight for, and we all inhabit it.

If you emigrate to a country, expect to be assimilated. If you you're moving there, the country is doing you a favor, not the other way around. In that sense you owe the country of your choice of emigration a great deal of compromise culturally. We've become so PC we cant even take pride in our heritage or nativity without someone making desparaging remarks about our not being PC. Who cares about PC? I care about my country, and I won't let straw man arguments make the essence of my argument into a completely different argument.
I like my metaphor. I stick with it. Mercury assimilates any non-ferrous or noble metal that comes in contact with it while rejecting baser metals...that's a good representation of how I feel. We have to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.
We should set aside ideologies. We should focus on our nation, not whether we eat pork or drink alcohol or not. Whether we go to a synagogue or a mosque.
