Yay some on brought the Book Thread back wave I had forgotten about it
Am currently reading, and very much enjoying, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" by Stieg Larsson
Very well written thriller.
Sad thing is the author turned in 3 manuscripts and then died of a heart attack. He never seen his books published. Poor guy.

#6: "The man in the Picture" by Susan Hill. Another of Hill's Gothic short books (novellas really) on ghostly subjects. Her first one was "the Woman in black" and this one is nearly as scary. The style she uses in these stories is old-fashioned like the stories of M.R James but just as effective as the more modern tales.A good read for a wild winter's night. The story is of a vengeance that transcends the grave and a terrifying cursed painting.

"In a single moment of determination I took hold of the painting, turned it and then looked at it with wide-open eyes....standing up at the back of a gondola was a man wearing a black cloak and a tricorn hat.The black water was choppy between the rocking gondola. He was between two other heavily masked figures. One had a hand on his arm, the other on his shoulder...the man had his head turned to me.The expr4ession on his face was ghastly to see-it was one of abject terror and desperate pleading. He was trying to get away.He was asking to be saved. He did not want to be on the gondola in the clutches of those others

Hi Crystal
I'm delighted to hear you read "The Woman in Black".I saw it first as a play, oddly enough, before I read it, and it scared the bejazus out of me. The TV film was good too.
