I driving down the road last December, when I noticed this old man trembling and laying on the pavement. I stopped the car and went back to check on him. Some women stood a few metres away from him and talked on her mobile. She told me she had called the emergency services..

the man was in spasm, looking very pale all over.. his pulse irregular, his eye movemets all over the place..
I asked the woman to help me move him into recovery position.. She swore the person on the phone had told her not to move him.. So I left him where he was, but held his hand..and reassured him that help was on the way..

After about three minutes of this, I noticed his pulse getting very faint.. and whispered again to the woman to call again,- and that they were going to need a defibrillator.. she still stood abou 4 metres away from the man, telling me that she did not want to call again..

his pulse had stopped.

Then a police car arrived. Apparently the woman had called the police,- and they did not have a defibrillator on board..- many more minutes later, after the police had asked for an ambulance, did one arrive. By then it was too late.

I was astounded how this woman seemed so decided about her (in)actions, but was so clearly not aware what she could have done to help..

I was very sad and mixed up after that, for a few days,- as I had help this strangers hand to his dying minute..

Sad hey? But things were out of your hands.
I also have a memory of travelling home on the bus, in my twenties, and seeing this old guy at the traffic lights clutching his heart and sagging to the ground and all around him people just surged across the road. I was too timid to get off the bus and go to his help. The memory stays with me. Maybe we need to make ourselves more bold? Maybe we meet this soul one day, and they ask us why we did not help them?sad flower

Remember now after what happened to me,later I thought how all those perfect strangers tried to help me and realised that basically, when push comes to shove people are intinsically good.

Yes, they are born that way. And then they get warped somewhere along the line.

My first husband could kill a human, maim without a thought, yet he would hold up the traffic to lift an injured animal into the car and take it for treatment. Once he threatened a policeman who tried to club a road-injured animal to death and told him to use his service revolver and he would pay for the bullet. But he would happily throw acid into a humans face!

even the compulsory course for a drivers license is still astonishingly basic..
