hollandgirl: Sorry what is the point you are trying to make?
Personally when I hear people on the street talking in a foreign tongue, it signals to me; stranger!
If these same people would speak English I would feel different and not see them as strangers.
Sure many come to our countries not being able to speak a word but when I came to Canada in '58 I would have to speak Dutch, but did it as quiet as I could.
Not so with many others they speak very loud, why, because they think that no one understands them anyway?
It is annoying to me, keep it quiet keep it down, that is all I would ask.

I don't mind so much if they speak their own language to each other be it at home or out in public as long as they can speak english to others. I think it is more of a comfort thing for them rather than them trying to piss others off or to talk about people. For the sake of communication they should be able to speak english. I don't mind that they have and practice their own religions either. We are all entitled to believe what we wish but i also think that all religion should be removed from our politics and schools, etc and restricted to worship in our own homes and places of worship, ie churches, mosques etc.

thumbs up

I'm really relieved to hear some rational thinking on this subject. I was finding it hard to believe that so many Australians had become so intolerant....but then perhaps I should not be surprised.

I go to indonesia often and I never hear people criticizing me for my poor command of Indonesian....

The key to the matter is respect for each other and celebrate our differences, not demand that everyone is a clone of the archetypal Aussie.....whatever that may be now!!

It would not matter how often you went to Indonesia, in relation to how well you speak the language, because you are only ever there as a visitor.

A far cry from you migrating there and then refusing to learn to speak Indonesian, and only go to English speaking hotels, and speak to other Aussies/other Anglo Saxons there. Right???

hollandgirl: Venere I believe you did the right think to bring this guy to the attention of the National Security Hotline.

Today I had another open inspection for above said property and I am now considering giving the lease to a young couple with a 1yr old baby, here as refugees from Afghanistan. An Aussie woman had phoned me to make the initial inquiry and accompanied her to the viewing. I have since spoken with one of the referees, a woman who had worked in Afghanistan and sponsored the young couple to come over here and in fact had them live with her in her unit, which she is now selling.

What impressed me is that her Aussie sponsor confirmed they are both working very hard to learn the English language through formal classes, and they are now both studying, she a Carer's certificate, and he a TAFE IT computing course, and driving taxis every weekend. Now THAT is making a fabulous effort. I would not hesitate giving whatever hand I can to help such people build a new life for themselves and their child who will grow up predominantly as an Australian, and no doubt excel at school, and later in life, at work professor

No, none of that is true, actually, I may be a visitor when I go there, but I am there for extended periods. And I do not only got to places where only English is spoken, most of the people I know are Indonesian.

I still think Australians appear to be becoming increasingly intolerant and this horrifies me. Where is this fear coming from?
