RE: The Patriot
As a child learning American history, the entire 'Colonial' period fascinated me. It has remained my favourite time period. To see any movies depicting this era is a joy as they are few and very far between. My all time favourite is Northwest Passage with Spencer Tracy and Robert Young. It is the true , though a bit glamourized, story of Roger's Rangers during the later part of the 'French and Indian Wars' which at the end, hints at the coming troubles with the colonists and England. The Patriot is a long overdue welcome continuance of Northwest Passage. It is my second best film of the rich history colonial era and the ensuing revolution against British rule. The authenticity of the entire production is simply amazing in every detail, thanks to both Mel Gibson's insistance and the full participation of the Smithtonian Museum of American History. The storylines, the details are flawless and inspiring , I would think to all who see it.
My third best for this era would be "Drums Along The Mohawk' with John Wayne and Claudette Colbert; another part of early colonial history largely forgotten by most, especially Hollywood, as are the stories of James Fennimore Cooper's Deerslayer and what are referred to as 'The Leatherstocking tales', of which only one, "last of the Mohicans' was finally re-made into a spectacular film adaptation of the old phrase, 'an all out action packed film' in a class all to its own, all filmed in the beautiful mountains of the Carolinas.
