Health care is an issue we all have to confront in our lives. What options do you have in your country and does the system seem to work or is it out of control?

I'm in the Medicare and AARP system since July 2010. I haven't used it for anything major but will be very soon. As far as AARP I'm not sure they are looking out for their customers. I just read something yesterday that they are siding with the government to reduce social security benefits whereas before they were fighting it. But that has nothing to do with your question. I'll know better how good Medicare and my supplemental plan is is when I have my surgery. I will say that before I went on Medicare I had private insurance because I was still working and I was pleased with their plan.

Montecito, Madicare doesn't cover everything . If you belong to AARP I would suggest you at least check into there suplamental insurance . You might have done it already, if so then good luck and have a speedy recovery .
I have and use Indian Health Services but still pay for my visits, medications and surgeries (if needed). Sometimes the care is great if the local IHS will accept my BIA card and other times, the care is substandard.

Hi...When you say AARP are you saying that you picked up their supplement and you have Standard Medicare part A,B and D.... "A" being the hospital portion..."B" the out patient portion and "D" the prescription drug coverage. Is the AARP plan picking up the deductable on part "A" and the other 20% of out of pocket charges...Is that what you have with AARP...or are you saying you are just a member and you have no supplement with AARP?

I doubt that any country has 'the best', but I'm very satisfied with our system, even though it has its faults. Nursing care is superb, medical care is excellent, Specialist care is world class standard. Indeed many of our Specialists are world leaders in medicine. Whether one is a 'private' patient with their own insurance, or a 'public/welfare' patient, both receive exactly the same high standard of treatment. Unlike a lot of countries, we have Universal and Private insurance, and where a person needs specialist treatment which may not be available here, the government covers the entire cost (for welfare patients) for the treatment abroad, irrespective of the seriousness of the illness. So yep, we're pretty happy with our health care here.
There´s a similar thread running on the EU forum. I´ll say the same here, Spain has one of the best health care systems in the world, I count myself as very lucky.
I don´t have private medical insurance as it´s not necessary with waiting lists being short here, and the same doctors/surgeons work in the public system as the private.
Yes I pay towards the benefit out of my hard earned salary, but it´s still a fraction of whate private insurance costs.
Have you noticed how private health providers very often transfer patients back into public health care when a serious illness arises like cancer? I observed this in the UK.

Insurance companies don`t like that little item called "adverse selection"..........
