anyway, i thought i should share the danger clearly stated in many links, with girld who might be tempted to go to duvbai, kuwait and qatar, and fly arabian airlines.. for false promise of petrodollars
Uvita: Here UAE have become a popular touristic destination, and noone complained .. of course you should keep in mind that you are going to a muslim country, so no need to provoke with bright make-up and short dresses.Treat people with respect and they will treat you in the same way. Also here there is a special working program for girls who want to work there in hotels and Duty free shops, some of my friends work there, get a promised salary and normal working conditions. The mentality is different from a western one, for sure, but different doesn't mean good or bad.. Also I agree that before making such agressive statements, it is better to visit the place yourself.
I lived in Turkey for 4yrs I made a point to try and understand the cultural differences and depending on where i went dressed appropriately.
Life was different to what i was used to, but an experience i learnt alot from.
Have to say i was treated with respect and kindness from the people i associated with.
Ladefoss23: our governments hush up the problem , because of petrol interest.. KUWAIT is specially a bad case
Well, if it were me or my immediate family, I would take the issue up with my country's Government opposition party & if they do take some kind of action - I would canvass a million votes for them!

Davidof: it really is a must-do, dubai is a paradise for women, lots of incredible shoppingmalls and classy beaches. you never will feel safer then in dubai, thats a promise...
Yes, that's what I've been told. And it's supposed to be like Singapore in terms of level of safety for women. I really do hope I can go on my next trip over and love being able to have a 30kg luggage limit on economy flights. No other airline provides that. Such a bonus!!!
I think it's great that people alert others of potential dangers of a particular country, but heck, I've lived most of my life in Australia, and we would all class it as the most dangerous country for a young female tourist to visit. Oh, and male, too. I think we've all heard of the Peter Falconio disappearance. There is an Australian male in jail, accused of murdering the young man, though thankfully, his fiance escaped. Let's not get into how weird that all was...
venere08: I'm reading the biography of Pamela Harriman, who had been a US Ambassador to France in the late 90's just before she died.
Apparently one of her aunts, shunned by their aristocratic family, went to Saudi Arabia and met a sheik(of-course, as you do), who had a harem(again, of-course, as he would). Very attracted to each other, she agreed to marry him, if for the first 5 (or 3??)yrs he did away with his harem. They were married and he kept his part of the bargain, and she became the dutiful Muslim wife, cooking and cleaning for him...handing him his meal with him sitting down and eating it (on the ground in the huge tent), with her standing up behind him, waiting for him to finish before she had her own meal. She did this willingly and as part of her marital duties as a Muslim wife. Their marriage lasted until she died. He never did bother with his harem in all that time. A gorgeous story of love...but I digress... entschuldigung, Ladefoss!
Studying (working) in an Arabian country and marrying a local man there are different things. I think nowadays we have enough information so women who marry a Muslim man should know about all the cultural differences and risks she takes. Personally, I'd never do it.

Neither would I. But neither is there a likelihood of me bumping into a sheik who wants to take me home!!

I've never dreamed of a Sheikh
Anyway from my daughter I know you can never meet Sheikhs in the streets and malls. The most wealthy ones don't live in Dubai and the capital of UAE Abu Dhabi, but in some of the other emirates. So they don't steal women from the streets
P.S. Some Western (and Eastern) women may get mislead because every Emirate wears a lot of expensive jewelry and drives an expensive car, but this is very common there because of the very high standard. So if a local man says he is a Sheikh it's most likely that he isn't

I heard of a girl in Kuwait who was drugged so much , she's outa her mind and suffers issues.. sometimes the damag is permanant..girls should be very careful

Oh, Lordy, no I don't dream of being whisked off my feet by a sheikh, or any other women to be stolen off the streets!!... just saying that I have nothing to worry about, the issue of me living as amuslim wife will not arise.
Actually, I understand the head of state (Prince, President???)insists on driving his own car, by himself, through the streets of Dubai, and stops to shop, just like the ordinary citizen. So I'm told....Now I am going to be calling my friend in the morning, as it will play on my mind, to find out which it is

That's ok...the woman should just introduce herself as the Queen of Shieba!

Yes, the emir of Abu Dhabi (who is a Sheikh) is young, well educated and very open-minded. He wants to open Abu Dhabi to the world and to create a great image of it.
I don't idealize things, actually I was quite worried when my daughter went to study there, but I must say there aren't any problems if you respect the local laws, which for non-Muslim people are quite reasonable (the locals have to respect Sheriat).

You are right there are different Muslims, but I still think we have always have in mind the religious/cultural differences.
Another thing: Many Muslim men are very open-minded while living in another country but once they get back to their country and family (with their non-Muslim wife) they get extremely conservative and their wife can have a lot of problems. Family and traditions are extremely strong in Muslim world, even if these Muslim men are 2nd generation living in some non-Muslim country.
