gargle: not at all, i just said i thought it was madness, you said you know 500 u would have to consider so i said you know more then me..
no argument
I like the early Santana group stuff. The arrangements are very cool, but his touch, tone, and phrasing the things he seems to get lauded for the most generally leave me wanting something more. What he did was innovative for the main stream, but it seems that he was imitating lesser-known guitarists of the time...but i dont think ANYONE would agree with my top 100
chancer_mcgancer: My favourite guitarists are great guitar players but that also match it with great music...
That would be your favorite "musician" this is a different catagory, it's just who's the best "guitarist" Guitarist being someone who plays the guitar. I don't think you should pick your favorite guitarist on anything other on how they play the guitar. I've said guitar and guitarist so much just now that the word has lost all meaning

If you follow the opinions of popular music mags then you'll cringe at this - but I've always been a fan of CC de ville back in the day. It just became uber cool to slate him ...
Vai, "Satch" and Friedman, 2 votes between them... Hendrix and Clapton the lions share... Hendrix and Clapton deserve mention as the most "influential" electric guitarists in modern music history, but best...Sorry, the jury is out on that one... No poll list will with the best will in the world would ever be able to cover the level of excellence and the sheer inventivness of players in the last 25 years or so...but good on the OP for running with the thred...Agree or disagree, here are some worthy contenders for consideration...
Robert Fripp / King Crimson... Todd Rundgren / Utopia... Scott Henderson / Chick Corea electric band... John Mc laughlan / Mahavishnu Orchestra... Al di Miola / Return to Forever... Allen Holdsworth / UK / IOU / Gong... Frank Zappa / FZ / Mothers of Invention... Tony Mc Alpine... John Pattituci / Dream Theatre... Stanly Jordan... Paco Da Lucia... Preston Reid... Steve Morse / Deep Purple / Dixie Dreggs... Andres Segovia... Frank Gambale... Ry Cooder...
I have tried to steer clear of the mainstream players... The players listed above are held in the highest regard by guitar professionals...No greater praise or recomendation...
A_B......
Incidentally, Steve Vai took lessons as a teen from Joe Satriani and graduated to "guitar god" status after getting the job working for Zappa as a Guitar Part Transcriber...He was credited with "stunt guitar and impossible guitar parts"...No kidding......
From a guitarists point of view the greatest guitarist would be the person who has done the most for the instrument itself and brought it to the world stage in such a way that the guitar has been accepted by other great musicians and composers as a great instrument.
It's worth noting that the guitar has never been accepetd as a standard instrument in a classical orchestra.
The Australian classical guitarist John Williams has been voted the greatest guitarist ever consistently over the last 30 years by both the classical world and the rock world.
Clapton, Van Halen, Malmsteen, Page, Knopfler, May, Al DiMeola, Vai, Satriani and tons of others have said in interviews that Williams is the greatest guitar player that has ever lived.
I have been lucky enough to see him about 10 times over the past 20 years. The first thing you notice at his concerts are all the famous guitarists in the audience.
