Inspired by a TV programme, I thought it may be interesting to see the results of asking this question...

You are sitting having a quiet drink in a bar, and an attractive young lady wanders in with a man and proceeds to sit down at the bar near to you.

You cannot help but notice that the lady is obviously intoxicated, is wobbling on her seat and clearly has had enough. The gentleman she is with insists on buying her another drink and another, and starts becoming over-familiar with her. She is not in any state to hold off his advances, although she does not seem very keen on them.

She starts becoming distressed, and asks him to stop. He doesnt, and insists on buying another drink for her and starts suggesting they book a hotel for the night. She tries to start walking away, but the man sweet-talks her back to the bar.

If you could see these advances were not wanted, and the lady was becoming more and more distressed, what would you do?

Bodecia: your poll raises many questions..but if you are in a bar you can get back up when you intervene..seen it many times working at Oktoberfest here..as a male it pisses me off and I do intervene...before anyone gets smart>>>YES I love women but I respect them thats the difference.I dont understand how people want help when needed but would not step up to the plate when they see someone in need.

yabbadabbadont: Hmmmm..... I can usually spot if someone is slightly loony....lol

Maybe you're right to just call her a cab then....or at least let the bar staff know to keep an eye on them....

Yeah, I was just curious really, what people thought about this.

After watching the programme, it was quite interesting to see how people reacted; men reacted differently to women, and it seemed to depend on how attractive the lady was as to whether the guys intervened!roll eyes laugh

The women actually seemed more aware, and more likely to step in.

dunno

I think it deals with the fact if a male is confronted we are more likely to go toe to toe where as real men wont if a women steps in.Sorry but I know from experience..

I'd walk over and with my back to the man, ask her if everything was OK. I'd also be mouthing the words, 'are you sure?' and using my eyes to question if she was telling the truth.
If she insists she is, unfortunately, there's nothing anyone can do.

The bar shouldn't be supplying the alcohol, as I'm sure that it's illegal to sell to someone or for someone who's incapable.

patmac: Get the bar staff to call the lass a cab, When it arrives make sure she leaves on her own with the help of any female bar staff or customers....As for the bloke he can try arguing with the bar staff and all the customers.....Doubt he would....

Yep. thumbs up

From watching the show, it was interesting to see how many people just stood by in situations like this, obviously not wanting to get involved. The Bystander Syndrome.

My first instinct is that this is a police matter but I wasn't sure so I just spoke to a police officer I know about this She said it could be a police matter but you need to get facts from the woman first about the status of the relationship with the man such as did they just meet in another bar.

If the woman says she just wants to go home then the officer suggested I should tell the barman and he should be the one to intervene with the man. If the man insists that's it's not anyone's business then the barman should call the police.

To reinforce this suggestion the officer told me that if she saw this happening she would approach the man in plain clothes and if the guy gave her any guff then she would show her badge.

I definitely would intervene with the woman by taking her to the ladies room or just sitting and talking to her which would probably annoy him. When he gets irate and shows anger that's when the barman should call the police.

OOPS!! Hello Montecito: thats all fine and well what the officer told you,but reality here during times like Oktoberfest are not what you would expect..Ive seen officers just stand there and watch the brawl start and security step in before they actually do anything..so I ll trust my human nature and step up to the plate to help a lady no matter the consequences..devil wine

Thank you for your comments, ladies..grin bouquet

What struck me in the programme was the subject of dress came up several times.

Now, as much as I believe that each and every one of us has the right to dress as we choose, there is no doubt that in this particular scenario the onlookers "judged" this woman by the fact she had a short skirt on and a plunging top, and seemed less willing to help out.

Go figure..dunno

Well thats the reality they judge the book by its cover and say she was asking for it..thats a shortminded persons way to look at it..how a woman dresses should never be the issue..scold

I would ask her if she is ok, does she want to go the ladies room? Then I would talk to her and ask her if she wants to leave. I would call a cab for her if she wants to go home and if there is a back door, go with her that way and make sure she gets into the cab safely.

If she chooses to stay and drink more, and be treated badly by the man, there is nothing I can do about it, but, as I think has been said here already, the bar staff should not serve alcohol to someone who is already heavily under the influence.

cynicalorange: Without knowing the whole story, you could be opening yourself for a bit of trouble.

Could be any matter of reasons (OK, I'll admit I can't think of one apart from on their way home from a funeral wake) that the situation may have happened.

Can't go wading in assuming just because he's trying to get her drunk, that he's going to attack her. Could be her husband/lover/partner or whatever for all we know.Ooooh, another reason... plucking up courage for something bedroom related.

That is why I said IF SHE WANTED

If she's that drunk, her word is invalid. You couldn't trust what she says as an answer, as it just wouldn't stand up in court.

I think it would be unwise to interfere 'until' things got violent, or there were any signs of physical restraint towards the lady.
