Announced on the radio today, GOAL are looking for people with certain skill sets to work at home and abroad. Taking into account that there's lots of skilled people unemployed - or in mind numbing unfulfilling jobs - would you have a look, send in a CV, see if anything comes back?

If I was younger and unemployed I would do it. Apart from the good it would do, the work experience would be of value later on in life. Not all rewards of course are financial.
no way...you'd be shipped off to some hell hole in Africa living in squalid conditions dealing with dangerous people every day...the sort that would think nothing of killing you for the change in your pocket....
fifitheminx: sounds like ur dream place ..!!i would do it.. def be an experience.
and doesnt charity begin at home..
why doesnt irish charities for the elderly and so on.. do some campaigning for skilled workers to work on old folks homes..or people call in for a cuppa..in times like this the oaps are hit bad..and prob even more isolated now that families have members leaving left right and centre.
U have a point fifi ... but there are alot of places like old folks homes etc, who dont have the money to even advertise and campaign everyone at the moment is broke and is trying to save anything ........
I had a look at the jobs there but theres nothing in my field its all accountany, office work and health
Just when i taut this might be interesting .. even canada is supposed to have those type of jobs at the moment no lab work/ factory type jobs ....
Plus i dont wanna leave home at moment probly will end up having to at some stage .....
mcattack: I think the fact people are struggling financially this is the last thing they would want to do, working voluntary and spending money you don't have wouldn't be appealing to me anyway
oh so this is all volunteer work?? I thought these were actual jobs advertised by goal...would be bad enough to to go live in 1 of these places but then to not even be paid would be a million times worse...you'd want to be gone in the head to do this

not talking about charities here in Ireland...did you read the link the op posted? this is volunteering in a 3rd world country in squalid conditions..not for the faint hearted and if you valued your life you wouldn't go
JaneDoe52: The simple answer to that is it is not typical of an Irish Council Est., it is one of the roughest and toughest places to live outside of some parts of Dublin ..... as well you know !
It's practical work experience, more valuable than a year in college.
It doesn't have a wage, but living allowances and transport are covered. There's also a resettlement grant for when you come home. You need to eat, so I wouldn't feel guilty about taking that relatively small amount from them.
Some of the jobs are in Ireland and London.
People who don't have the exact skillset matching the posted jobs are welcome to apply anyway. They're not looking for people with my skills, I'll still throw in a C.V. anyway - who knows what they might have to offer?
It would probably be a great life experience. . . Provided you survive HC.

i in the past have lived in some of these parts..and still have friends there..
id run thru them blinged up to the eyeballs covered in little bags of gear much quicker than walk thru some of the mental places on the rest of the planet in rags.
that aside im sure in a group setting volunteering id soon get streetwise to anywhere..

I am sure the people from Muirhevnamore would say the same as you about where they live ............... there is good and bad no matter where people reside from mansions to mud houses !!!!
And Africa is no different, that is my point ......... wonder how many people on this thread have even been to Africa ?

why are you obsessed with muirhevnamore? you couldn't possible compare an Irish housing estate to a village in Africa
Think of all the poor starving children over there.
Think of all the poor starving childrens slim fit mothers who would do ANYTHING to get their children to the front of the queue for help.. Like I mean >>>>ANYTHING<<<<,

I'd agree with you on this, its best to look at it from a positive point of view, for anyone that has no prospects of getting a job in the near future and is losing heart it would be a great life experience and maybe a new lease of life for them....I worked in Haiti for 3 weeks last year building houses and saw such poverty, but the people were amazing and I'd do it again in a heartbeat....

That sounds interesting Tusiemc, wonder what skills were needed for the construction. . .
Don't worry about the auld ticker - still works, there see that. It's flying out of my chest a little the last while, but still works ok.
glad to hear it I didn't mean you in particular tho,I meant people in general and this was really all that was needed..oh and a small fortune had to be raised too

Ah it doesn't matter who you were referring to at all, I wouldn't miss the chance to squeeze a bit of in there.
I do have training that could be of use in one of those countries, but no small fortune now. My mattress is slim with few bumps, and the tumble-weed in my bank account is showing little appreciation.

hey if your not working at the minute, I'd say go for it, it doesn't look like you need to raise money for it and you seem to have a great attitude, you will meet some brill people and have an amazing experience I'm sure, as someone once said 'life has no remote, you need to get up and change it yourself'thumbsup:

Well I'm kept busy enough off and on, but wouldn't be missed that much really.
Cheers to you, and fair play for getting in there and actually going over to Haiti, speaks volumes about your character. Part of the point is that it's easy to talk about it, but not many actually go over and do it.
