A court battle over treasure from an old Spanish shipwreck has reached Gibraltar, where descendants of the sunken cargo's owners are fighting to win back part of the booty from Spain.
The British-administered territory has been drawn into a tangled squabble between Spain, US treasure hunters and the Latin American descendants, in a case harking back to the days of the Spanish empire.
Mathilde Daireaux Kinsky, an Argentinian who lives in Colombia, says part of the cargo of the Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes, sunk by the British in a sea battle in 1804, belonged to her ancestor Diego de Alvear y Ponce de Leon.
A Spanish general in the colonies at the time, he was not on board himself but lost his wife and seven of his children along with his precious coins in the shipwreck, Daireaux told AFP.
"We are not doing this for the money. We are seeking respect for the memory of our family members who died on board the Mercedes," said Daireaux, 49, one of six descendants claiming the treasure in the Gibraltar courts.
I think it should be split between the country of nationality of the discoverer, and the country it originated in. But remember the so called "Spanish treasure" was looted from the Americas to begin with.
Finders, keepers. Odyssey put in the effort, time and money to seek and find this and all the other wrecks, they get legal ownership in my world. Those ships and cargo were given up for lost ages ago. If Odyssey wants to put up the treasure for auction then let those who want it bid for it.

Agree 100%. The Sea owned it, the owners and investors and crew of the Odyssey found it and reclaimed it from the sea.The Odyssey's efforts were the sole reason a recovery occurred.
I could probly find several links to this event but where I live at we had a fleet of spanish ships go down in the eighteen hundreds. One of our storms got em. Anyhow I was raised that when and if we found something of value from those ships (and yes they had plenty of treasure on them ) If it was over a certain amount spain got some, the government got some and like my pay check I got to keep a little after everyone elses hands were in it. Not all the ships have been found. But as the years have passed by and my little haven has been populated, less and less treasure washes to shore. Though I know the jewels and gold is the prize I am a lover of old things and I love the old pieces of dish, even the old pieces of the ships. It is not always finders keepers Love the old treasure storys.
