Phoenix: By and large what you said is true but the Brits did carry out some very dirty deeds in 1974 in Dublin & Monaghan for example, Seamus Ludlow case (htere are other cases too)..There were people both North and South who suffered at the hands of the British in recent history too.
IM JUST SAYING there seem to b people in the south who hate the brits and spout on bout british occupation, and it all fuels hatred, but its easy for a southerener to do that because it wont b his head blown off when he goes into the chip shop for his diner, unlike the people on the shankill rd.

One thing I learnt about growing up in the North is the bullet thats meant for you, you aren't going to hear it. I take on board prowler what you meant. It's easy to talk about things when you haven't experienced it.

I was told to never hate my enemies because this could cloud my judgement.
I drove down the Shankill a couple of years ago with the Kildare GAA flags flying on the car, wrong turn , def not on purpose, and got a few looks but no really bad reaction. Yeah Prowler, good point. There is far too much anti Brit sentiment in the south. The war is over it should be about building bridges and working towards a solution rather than dwelling on past grievances.

Im sure if you had of explained your views to them, they would have taken you in for tea. They might have asked you were you related to Conor Cruise O Brien.

So you must have went right at Crumlin road and the Woodvale Road round-a-bout. Very easy mistake to make. And depending on the time of year could be a dangerous mistake too.

I have plenty of relations up there. But not many I would like to drink tea with just yet, when they evolve their thinking I would be more than happy to sit down with them. A bit Like Martin and Lizzie today, It is all about working together to solve the problems.

I came out of a shopping centre carpark, had the sat nav set for the giants causeway and next thing I knew there were lovely murals of a man on a white horse on the gable ends of houses.

A few years ago I got caught up in a 12th parade on my way back from Croker
4 Donegal jerseys in my car, coming through Kesh, and had to stop to allow the marching band through. We were then waved on, and drove up the street behind them
i havent been further north than clones, and that was only for couple of hours when dublin played derry up there in 05.no doubt theres plenty of people like me who havent been up round belfast either.every1 has an opinion bout the north but like me ,there not qualified to talk bout it.some aul lad in my local tonight goes"mcguinness shouldnt have shook the queens hand",so i said why not.and he goes"she just shouldnt""shes a symbol of the brits"bla bla bla.i told him our opinion was irelevant because we dont live up there.i toold him that talk just fuels badness and hatred and its not fair that we should talk like that when theres people up there who want all the badness to end so their kids can grow up in peace

Was it a Dunnes Store? I'm trying to figure out were you went wrong...

No, it was a shopping centre , lots of little shops in it, not so modern but probably built around eighties/nineties. Car park was open , not multi storey. There were some nice neo Classical buildings around. I realised I had gone wrong when I seen sign for Shankill lower. Would that be right?

Chances are Castle Court. You went up Peters Hill.

It was midday, so was prob safe enough, stayed the night before at a hotel near Belfast international airport,[middle of nowhere] and called in to the city for a look around on the way to the coast. I am planning to head up that way again for the Titanic exhibition, that sounds really good.

Doubt it (stand to be corrected) If it was the centre of town it's Castle Court or the bottom of High Street. Either way he drove up Peters Hill, Shankill, Woodvale Road, Crumlin Road...Causeway
Or Peters Hill, Shankill, Tennants Street, Crumlin Road (three point turn) Carlise Circus and the up the Antrim Road to the Causeway...
Smithfield would take him closer to the bottom of the Falls Road..
stanley8m: I couldnt tell you the name of the place face, they were just shops where I could get a few bargain buys.
You should have kept going up the Shankill until Ballygomartin. It's a lovely drive all the way around to the Whiterock Road. Great view of the city. Stop off in the Marty for an ethnic pint with the locals

I don't know that part of the city too well. But couldn't you turn out of the car park at castle street onto Peters Hill by going just a little way up that dual carriageway?

Castle Court--->North Street---> Peters hill. It's very easy done. The odd time I'd jump the 55 Bus and go along the Shankill.
mickeyscouse: First you need a united Northern Ireland, and that is unlikely to happen with so much hatred & bitterness on both sides.
I reckon it will happen. Who would have thought 20 yrs ago the DUP and the quislings would be sharing power. Or as yesterday showed the head of the British Army shaking hands with the once former cheif of Staff of the PIRA...
@ Face..Sometimes the 57 wasn't there and they almost take the route home. They start at the same place and basically finish at the same place with a wee detour in between. N°55 goes up the Shankill before it hits the Crumlin Road and the 57 goes straight up the Crumlin Road.
