HuggerMan4U: Anywhere where Jono is would be a nice place to be. If it's good enough for Jono, it's good enough for me. Failing that, many Americans are retiring in Belize. They speak English, and I suspect they use U.S. dollars as well.

hiya H wave
very kind of you, thankyou

it really is a great place to retire here. not in the city,
but in the smaller towns that dot the coast.

JeanKimberley: all of Canada is beautiful..... in summer..... winter (which is 9 months of the year) not so much!

In winter it is time to visit the relatives in tropical climes.

west of the rockies much warmer than rest of canada
and stay southern BC. Much like Seattle's climate. but if
you love Scotland (i do...wine ) then you would enjoy BC
as well.

Isn't the best place to retire where you have your love ones?

Will you really be happy moving to a "paradise" for your retirement?

How long will your happiness last at your "new" place?

After all, happiness is so many other things than just money!

Of course, we're all entitled to dream!

Go for your dreams!thumbs up

This surf good enough????

Or he could become a grey nomad, and travel around Australia.

Careful with Indonesia though. It is not really easy to buy property, you need to trust a local, and there are plenty of stories where it went wrong. And plenty of succes stories obviously. Bali, is probably a favorite since people tend to speak english. But whatever you decide, make sure to do your homework, otherwise you might see your savings go down the drain.

Norway, is a great country to bike. Although the weather isnt the best in the world, it is still great 3 months a year. Any reason why you cant retire in multiple countries?

From the names on your list, I'd pick the Dominican Republic as I've been there several times and have toured the entire island and have gotten to know the peoples there in general. I could easily make a good income selling art to tourists or invest in horse ranching as some former stewardess's have done and have made a wonderful life there.
I used to think Paraguay would be nice; I was offered a good deal on land at only 17 dollars an acre...that was back in the 70's. Too young and too brash... Now, the disease of US military 'advisers' are there, ostensibly to curtail the on going drugs trade; nothing new as it was going well but quietly when Stroesner was in power. 'Development' has arrived and clear-cutting of the forest land for all the plagues of modern cities; the country is not going to remain healthy...
Southern Brazil is fantastic around Blumenau; looks like Switzerland and is mostly German, but then Argentina has over 3 million various Europeans there. It is a rich and cultured country and very well armed with a good military trained by Europeans, especially Germans.
Just spent a month there; will return fairly soon. Money and politics are 'stable', but hey, what is a coup or two, right...it's fun if you have the right perspective...grin
