I think the saying has something to do with the "strange" in stranger not the meeting of new people and becoming friends.

Cos they´re frightened. Not without reason!!!!!!!! cos some strangers are stranger than others.
Happily, most of us don´t encounter too many problems, whether by luck or intuition, I´m not too sure. Keep an open heart

It's usually the other way around with me...I am quite happy to talk to strangers (so many years of solo-travelling I think), but sometimes you get a funny look, and people don't want to be friendly. It's not usually a problem in the small town where I live just now, but in the city it's a bit different.
