@ soloseeker - The first pc that I bought (not just used) was a pentium 2, after studying all the latest pc mags I ordered it to be built the way I wanted it and with speakers, back-up external drive, printer and scaner it cost me just over AU$6,000 it had all the latest technology that was availale at the time.
I had that pc 13 years because I had my own IT business I often had to replace pc's for companies and they didn't want the old ones so I took them home to up-grade mine. Whenever I had enough parts to build another eorking unit I would give it away to someone that I knew could never afford one for their kids.
In 2008 I bought my first lappy but my 13 yo pc was still working so I gave it to my brother-in-law. The lappy lasted 2 years and died, bought another lappy, it too only lasted 2 years and died.... I am now 5 months into my 3rd lappy, I have never lost any files since day one because of my back-up drive and I have used every MS operating system since windows began, I have Win 8 Pro but it's still in the box and I am still using the earlier system because according to all the information that I have read, windows 8 does not include Windows media player.
I use all the ms office pro programes as I have done 4 years full-time IT studies.... here is a little trick that you can do if you have ms word on your pc.... type the following code at the start of a new page exactly as I've done here or copy & paste...
=Rand (10,12)
The above code won't do any harm.... but it will make you the fastest typist around......
soloseeker: My first computer lasted for 9 years & a few months ago, it just wouldn't start up after pushing button (laptop, Dell). The computer repairman said he would have to take it apart to find the problem & it would be probably be costly, so I should spend that money towards a new one. I bought another laptop, Dell.
I switched to an Apple laptop this last time and now I am a fan. Although my first computer was a hewlett package 20S scientific calculator I still use it to .... figure out my tip in a restaurant.

KIBALUV:
So, only 3 MACs in 17 years. They are VERY dependable & worth the price!
I'm on my third MacBook Pro in three years. Hard drive just completely gave up on the first, took me so long to get everything off it. Bought another one which had problems from the start and Apple replaced after a month, this one's been better.
Before that was a Toshiba laptop, an Acer laptop and five desktops over the years....I won't count the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 because they just make me feel old :)
Bought my son a Toshiba laptop because he prefers Windows, don't think I could ever go back to that now although I run windows programs on mine when needed.
Desktops were easier to take apart and put back together when they went wrong though...and to recover data from!

JeanKimberley: wow should I expect trouble from mine?......
To be honest I didn't really look after the first one that well. Never shut it down or put it into sleep mode and then dragged it from one side of the world to the other a couple of times.
The second one was just glitchy, I guess it happens.
soloseeker: How many computers have you bought in your life? It seems no matter how well you take care of your computer, eventually it will stop working & sometimes due to the age or for other reasons, it's more sensible to buy a new one than to pay lots of money to have it repaired.
I have bought more than I care to admit. And have more than I care to admit. They are taking over. I really need to part with some

Yet I am thinking about buying another one different sizes for different functions Ya know you can't leave home without it. The one I have for on the go is built into my cell. Really would like one a little bigger....then I will need bigger purses. Vicious cycle I do say
