To me this is a catch 22....yes I feel I should be able to decide what I should be able to drink, however if the producers would regulate how much sugar or even preservatives goes into something would be great!
GUZMAN1: It's a matter of why exists a certain tax, supposedly to pay services wanted by the taxpayers.
Not to taxes that politicians invent and justify by uncertain reasons.
true, but it seems like a "sin" tax to me, if they are going to do that where will it all stop! Next they will be adding a higher tax to whole milk vs 2% milk...as you can see I'm very bored
It's just another nickle and diming scheme like many others. Once implemented, they never disclose what they are doing with the extra revenue. Sugary drinks have always been popular but they are not the only contributors to unhealthy lifestyles.

Hi 2intrigued well, really it's the USDA fault for a lot of our unhealthy food, I think I'm going organic all the way...seriously

it's another money/tax grab. greed has dictated that taxing the other 'vices' isn't giving them enough money. i also think it's aimed at the poor who can least afford to pay more taxes. if you walk down the grocery aisle, those who can not afford to buy real juice will buy fruit drinks 'fruit punch rather than fruit juice', and they will buy pop rather than more expensive beverages...both high in sugar, as are many of the items, not just beverages, that are less expensive. adding additional taxes to these items is one more action separating the haves from the have nots.
it would be just as easy to build in regulations that put a ceiling on how much sugar can be added in the production process, but then...they wouldn't be able to tax it...putting limits on sugar during production phase would actually demonstrate concern for diet. adding taxes demonstrates it's money motivated, not health motivated.
I've tried going organic/non GMO but it's harder than you would think. Unless packaging states non GMO, you can assume all corn and soy products are GMO. This includes soy lecithin, high fructose corn syrup, vegetable oil and many others.
I Think Government does not care about anyones Health, They just want to collect Tax Money from us...we are taxed on the money we make, we are taxed on the same money when we spend it on something, then we are taxed again when we sell it, and we are taxed again at the end of the year on personal property and Realestate Tax... What the H3ll

Hi jono you are 100% right...if they were so worried about our health they would regulate that at production...your a wise woman

I know, I've read labels and it's shocking how they can get away with "organic"...I read on the subject and it goes into a deep level of cans and cant's....last year when I still had my 80 acres I was planning on starting an Organic farm producing vegetables and just the fertilizer you had use was complicated...however I do plan to make my own garden...

it is just another example of how the obama regime is telling the people how to live. next thing we will be ordered to do is raise our right arm and pledge allegience to his highness and say seig heil
Ccincy: Here in Ohio we pay a tax/deposit on surgary drinks such as pop.
Down in Tennessee which has no income tax they charge a 9.750% tax on Food and 8.00 % tax on non food items.
oh wow! the tax here in Ponca is 8.667% but I live in Osage co. in the country and go to the convenience store and the tax is 4.57%...it's crazy how much difference there is

john it's not just one political figures fault.they're all to blame for the messes our country is in.Some of it is also the people who vote these people in office.

Mark up for profit is one thing but this business of pyramiding taxes like that is pretty crafty of most governments.
This isn't how I would do it, although I agree with the idea of making it harder for people to be unhealthy.
If it was up to me, I would ban all imports of fizzy drinks then order domestic business to charge more for each drink and make the profits from the price increase go directly to the workers instead of it being wasted on government bureaucracy and entitlement programs.

i agree. and u know who is behind it all. its michelle obama. she is the one who is shoving it down our throats. she should take her own advice and stop making a pig of herself by having those parties at the taxpayers expence. she should shut up and act like a normel first lady. her and her porr excuse of a husband and president is living the high life while people in this nation is struggling to make ends meet

that's true! Do you know if NYC banned big gulp drinks? I think they were going to try and limit what size you could actually buy I do see where they need to start offering more healthy foods in the school system though, but it won't work because the child is already accustomed to fast food and bad habits at home, so therefore the kid isn't going to want to eat healthy at school, it's a crying shame really...but that's how I was raised in school too, having a choice between chocolate milk and regular milk, well I don't think anyone drank the regular, so it started a long time ago
Scott1812: We,re all big boys and girls and quit able to make up our own minds.
true! but you know what? you can't even go to the grocery store and buy anything that hasn't had something done to it, either for preservative or mass production...I think I'm growing my own garden and getting my chickens back

John Political figures have been shoving stuff down our throats for as far back as I can remember.
It's also all the commericals we see on tv and ads in the news etc which are all government controlled televison programs.Or these diet commericals like Jenny Craig,Weight Watchers etc who tell us that we should all look like twigs on trees.
I read about how Michelle Obama was on a kick about children eating proper meals etc.

Set school meals would be a good start. If a child is thirsty he will drink water, if a child is hungry it will eat what you give him to eat. After this it is up to parents to remember that they are the adult and the child is not a little adult, but is in fact a child, a child that belongs to its parents.

I agree CC, and it's not exclusive to the US, it's pretty much every government. Financial advisers/planners use the same curriculum when it comes to up-selling for financial gain.

Hi SG, there is also talks about a tax on sugary drinks here.
Just looking at the facts: there are more and more overweight people and young children, this will put a huge burden on the health system and tax systems everywhere.
Something has to be done to promote a healthier live style, I don't know if a tax is the right way but so far education on food hasn't worked. So what to do alternatively?

I agree 100% but the problem with this is the kids parent's are eating and providing unhealthy food at home. They actually had a program on TV a couple of years back where a healthy chef from UK here to try and get the food programs in school to serve healthy meals, the parents became enraged! We will be our own demise for sure.
