JeanKimberley: and my original point is that little girls are being exploited in a lot of other places than in beauty pageants and they are making the determination because of watching or seeing or hearing about the reality television shows.

The fashion industry has exploited little girls for years. The print magazine industry has exploited little girls for years. The makeup and beauty industry has exploited little girls for years.

Merriweather: BTW 54xmax...

thanks for putting our aussie views up... via the video..

and I just want to add..

we cannot afford to be doing this type of thing for another reason..

We have a country of 240 odd races and cultures.. and the idea is to break down the barriers... with our young generations...

not make it worse by pitting kids against each other...
i agree.

54xmax: I am curious, what do you think about one more typically American obssesion. Children Beatuy Pageants

I am personally against it, because for the most part, mothers are living through their children, are ruining their self image, and in effect are emotionaly abusing their children.

They tried to export the franchise to Europe, and Australia. Unsuccessfully, because people simply did not accept it in any shape or form. Nor should they.

It is flourishing in central and south America. Go figure?

And you are certainly welcome to think what ever you think. However, living here in America, I see around me, and I don't think it is a typical American obsession. Now getting their children in sports, arts, music, science, and other club activities - wanting their children to compete and do well in sports, arts, music, studies, that is an American obsession!

Yet, again, we are not talking in this thread about these things. Again, diverting attention. Can you stand your ground with proper arguments.

Oh wait, you did, and they were based on money.

Let us just agree, that we don't agree. How's that.

The baby and photograph competitions that take place are for boys and girls there is a huge difference between those and beauty competitions...that's my opinion ,...why use makeup on a small child and false nails etc ..for a beauty competition,...yes a child might think its great if they getting all the attention and adulation of winning, children are impressionable and their minds are not fully developed,...oh and as for sports or gymnastics for a child there is a huge difference, and no I'm not talking about when kids are are under pressure to do so well like their life depended on it....

BTW, intelligence and abilities don't count in many beauty contests around the world, for children or for adults.

JK... one really cool thing about Aussies is that we call a spade a spade.. and we are not restricted in speech at all..providing we stay respectful..

and if we don't like something... we up and say it...

and that is exactly what the video portrays..

Saying what we don't want in a respectful way...and backing it all up with common sense .

54xmax: Exactly, for the sake of fame, money, and sickening disturbed insecurities and unfulfilled fantasies of their mothers.

I've never talked to a parent who enters their child into beauty pageants. I've never been to any. I only have the edited media versions to go by and I don't really want to have my mind exploited by reality TV.

I don't like beauty contests for adults, or children, I don't much like living in a dog eat dog competitive world, I don't like fashion and dieting industries, Barbie dolls, or pastel shades of Lego for girls (colour effects learning).

BUT...I wonder what your experience of child beauty pageants is.

I wonder how you've come to your conclusions about parents thoughts, feelings and motives.

I wonder why we feel the need to demonise other parents so much in our societies.

Beauty pageants for children in competitions should not take place at all,I don't want to say anymore than what's been said already....it's my opinion and that is what most intelligent parents I know of think about it too.

I must admit I have not yet watched this video - I was responding to some of the "arguments" against beauty pageants, and the opinions stated as facts by the op (when they are clearly opinions)

I never said I cared for child beauty pageants. I was just saying that some of the posts and blanket generalization statements were over the top and of all the things that are wrong in the world - this activity ranks rather low in my opinion, in things that one needs to work at changing.

Aussies are not any better historically than America at uplifting woman's status in their own countries.

naught to do with demonising.. Jac.

don't make it worse... please..

it's a plain and simple debate...

btw... if you watch that video to the end... the American mother is so emotional... and our aussie is cool as a cucumber.. and not once did she resort to over the top emotional displays...

I like the bit... where the American mother enters her child in a beauty contest when the child was 16 months.. and says.. the child chose this life for herself..

What???confused

I don't think she is foolin anyone but herself..

Perhaps its just a case of mothers loving the bling themselves way too much... and then plonking it all on their babies... and when their babies take to it... (of course they will.. children will think this to be a game and please their mums) until they start to understand that all of a sudden, when they don't win their comp... it will hurt... not at 2 yrs old.. but definitely at 8-10 yrs old.. that could destroy a child..

not a good thing

devil I'm not...... hehehehehe devil

To the last video post - all the photographs seem to be of Jon Bennet - which is how old a video now? So I question if this is the current trend in child pageants.

The commentators, which sounds like a school report makes blanket statements how some winners are self centered.

and the child says I won this for best smile - gee what child of this age don't you know that has a self-centered view of the world? turn it around, imagine it is a boy who won a spelling bee saying the same thing about a trophy or ribbon. and the self-centered view will be very similar.

But for the "child beauty pageants are evil" it does come down to a fundamental question. That is the core value in America of competitiveness and beauty. Beautiful people are valued, and youth is valued so put them together and wow a beautiful youthful competition. Who is the most beautiful, the best? And is not beauty most subjective rather than objective view of things?

And I really think you all don't give young girls enough credit to learn to lose gracefully or to be a "good sport" about winning or losing. If a boy loses a game in little league, or doesn't win the spelling bee, or falls in a school play or doesn't get picked for the team because they are not good enough, a lot of parents would say, they need to learn the hard lessons of life, and teach them about competition and working hard, or practice.

It is surprising that you would not attribute little girls of not being about to grasp the same lessons of sportsmanship or overcoming barriers and losing to become the better person, the character building.

No, it seems you prefer to suggest that little girls will be so hurt if they lose, or vain if they win. I think perhaps by thinking about this in another way, there is a little gender bias going on.

devil thanks ya'll for allowing me to play the devil's advocate! devil

Merriweather: Every mum thinks there child is good enough to be a child model.. but really... it takes a special child... a child with an abundance of patience...

My son is in advertising... and attempted to get my granddaughter to model... so... on the day of the shoot... she was tired, and grumpy... and she would not repeat the same action over and over.. so although she did get paid for her 'one time'...
she was never asked to do it again..

all she had to do was blow 'bubbles' a thing she normally has fun doing... and
just to let you all know... there is no makeup and no hair do on a shoot... all that gets photoshopped later.. oh.. and no dressing up either...

I hope you realize that I support your views and experience and value your opinion in it as well.thumbs up

Merriweather: Oh.. I had no idea she was dead/ dying..

still... I don't agree with any of that over the top makeup and dressing up stuff she got her daughter to do..

This whole story is sad...

You don't have to judge Jac... you can sit on the fence... you sometimes hop off the fence ...while we sit on it...for other topics.. that is fine..

I think we perhaps have different concepts of what judging people means.

For me, judging a person is different from looking at their behaviours.

To directly criticise a parent and say they need a slapping is different from saying a parent's behaviour may impact upon a child in such and such a negative way and that this could be considered appropriate for change.

Perhaps we also have different concepts of 'sitting on the fence'. dunno
