Well, Obama isn't the only one who could've done something, indeed. But The fact that he spoke now, after Fidel's death speaks volumes...you won't point a knife at a dead man... What's in store, I hope they won't become anything like Mexico for example...[/quote
I hope the people of Cuba will finally prosper...be an independent country...but not to be exploited...

KremaP: Without the embargo Cuba had everything to prosper and to prosper well... And no, you certainly can not compare him to Tito... I am sure many on here would have to google Cuba or Fidel to actually gain some knowledge about it...
You're right; they can not be compered. Castro had lived humble life and he done what he believed that was right for his people interest...while Dictator Tito was a hipocret who talk about socialism and equality of all people - while he had at least 50s big villas and enjoyed all luxuries of Western lifestyle ...like King. He just missed to put crown on his head like Cesar.

Fidel & Raul Castro, HUMBLE? I think they believe what they say, but any caprice they desired, they got.
tomcatwarne: Castro was a great prime minister, who suffered withhis coubtry nder the bully boy tactic of the US.
Castro suffered, but only in his ego. About the reasons, yes it's true that USA bullies Cuba. Perhaps it's time to think about who can keep the order in the island if the local authorities lose their control.

Bulling is not even the right word here...it was way more vicious... Who's gonna put their nose into Cuba's own business is the question and we don't really need an answer...
There are dedicated leaders in Cuba, who have the country and its people at heart.
Not many countries can claim that.
The Cuban people didn't always agree with every policy that Fidel had, but they genuinely respected and loved him as he never became corrupt as many leaders in his position have. Hell, most of them have,
Raul is more forward thinking than Fidel, and will make more changes now which he didn't do while Fidel was alive out of respect for him.
I hope they make the changes slowly and keep the amazing individualistic spirit of Cuba alive, and not allow the likes of McDonald's and Trump Hotels to take over the beautiful island.

loulou77: Why not the other Presidents?...you cannot pin this one on Obama...although generally Republicans are afraid of socialism/communism...so doubtful they would of cared to address it...
Castro could have been an authoritative social democrat instead of a communist if not for that American fear. All too often nations were tossed as a present to communism because they refused to be as economically far-right as America.

And right on your doorstep, too. You would have thought them being your neighbour would have given the incentive to work with Castro on some kind of compromise. Not an arrangement which made the British rule of 19th century Ireland look generous.
Anyway, it is true that Castro did not originally want a 100% centrally planned economy like the Stalinist he became and some of reforms they're pushing now would be unnecessary because those mistakes would never have been made if Americans were not so paranoid about socialism.

Trudeau and Sanders seem to be the definition of a communist for many Americans when actually these are the people we need to hear a bit from so that we never hear from communists. That's how it works.

And it doesn't matter that Castro was a strongman dictator. Great and highly-educated peoples can be responsible for themselves, but despotism is a perfectly acceptable form of government for backward people.

Why don't you pack up,and move to Cuba, let's say.for five years, then let us on CS know how you did fare,if you do make it out of that Cuban Dungeon by then!

I imagine Castro had to choose alliances...one not being USA.. The sanctions against Cuba were unfair...lets hope the USA will reverse the embargo...

The US pressure on Cuba pushed Castro to communism, which wasn't formerly the ideology of the revolutionaries.
About the embargo, it was a response to the expropiations of american properties.

Without looking I imagine Trump's view will be the same as our Conrad here. Many mistakes were made in the past, and now there's the chance to make them all over again and it's all thanks to the grudge of an old man.
123whisper: Hope you're well dear friend. Even if I grow bear ...I will never be a Man. The good thing about any dictator is that one day they die. Personally I don't feel anything about Fidel Castro death but Cubans who celebrate his death surely must have a good reason to feel that way. I remember when Dictator Tito died; no one in forma Yugoslavia was allowed to celebrate but even if they didn't feel crying, people felt oblaged to cry, fearing regime ....Only people who went in emigration, they where free to throw a big party to celebrate for a week or more .... I do not see shame or pride in that ...as during Tito life he did much genocide over his own people....like most dictators did !
omg that is sooo fat lie and complete explanation is waay too biased and rearranged to fit your current convictions... dunno where you gathered such info but i assure you that is not what happened in Yugoslavia for sure. if being a dictator means doing everything possible to make people feel safe and to erase the gap between blue and white collar, to offer free education and improve free health system, to offer a job to everyone and a chance to blend in society, to deny polithical and religious extremism plant seeds of hate among nations stirring national chauvinism then i welcome any dictator to rule over me.

holly cow... name just five mansions Tito actually had in his posession and i will admit you are right. unless you call residences for high representatives, statesmen and guests - his own...and even then you exaggerated big time. i am not sure you quite understood the difference between socialism and communism so it is hard to debate without making it look like a tutoring lecture. but for a start maybe basics of a marxist doctrine, lenins views of communism, kardeljs selfmanaging socialism and gaddafis explanations of liberal green socialism would help you create a more accurate and sharp aspect. after that it would be cool to explore titos biography and development of a communist party from kingdom of scs,yu to fpry and finally sfry.
I think Castro started off with good socialistic intentions, but I think the American government didn't like that approach. So, they were embargoed and led into the hands of a communistic country ie: Russia.....then as Castro turned towards communism the ugliness unfolded.....listen to Liz Wheeler she says it all....
