gozoman2: no it ain't....not spoken anywhere else in the world.....has it's own grammar, own alphabet, and is the only language that binds the western form of alphabet with the phonic eastern languages.....the closest there is is Aramaic, which in effect was the language used in Middle East in Christ's time.

Possibly could have something to do with the Phoenicians, since it is thought that the first form of modern civilization introduced here was through the Islands having been colonized way back as a trading post by the same.

And they certainly were not Arabs. Arab culture emerged from North Africa, and that we are not.

We are Mediterranean.

aaaaah.....

The Moors were a culture that developed in Marocco, and their expansion occurred through the tip of Gib into the Spanish peninsula.

As in effect is still highly evident today with the enormous cultural influence that exists in those cities at that end of the Eu continent.

Just for the sake of clarity.....at the time of the Moorish influx into Spanish mainland, that culture was at it's apex, whereas the European nations were still deeply divided and still living in the dark ages.

In effect the Moors were a much more advanced culture in all fields, medical, architectural, scientific and social.

But they weren't a sea faring nation, so they never made it this far down the med.

Not true. Maltese people should not want to erase that fact of their history. You had Arabics before Christianism. The Arabics were Expelled by Christianism, just like what happened in other countries here in the South.
Of course they were much more advanced in many sciences, that we know.drinking
It also says that your language had arabic influence. It was not possible run from that due to their stay there.
Since 7th centure Arabics have been travelling around and then came the Portuguese and Spanish only in the 15th century claiming to have discovered the world!doh

Chapter three......

Mdina, as even the name itself signifies, is MEDINA, the city, and it's inception is thought to be in effect Arabic....but not Moorish, they are two distinct cultures that evolved in different period of history.

However, the Arabs didn't stay here for long, since for European overlords, it was too close for thier confort, so they were thrown out by the Normans, under the rule of Count Roger. It is legendary told that in fact Roger gave part of his flag to the Maltese to make their own. His was a checkered white and red, ours is just half white half red.

Mdina, originally just a fortification on top a hill, became the city. As such all the Maltese gentry moved their and made it their own, inclusive of palaces and cathedrals.

When the Knights of St. John were thrown out of Rhodes by Sulemien the Turk, they were too powerful for any of the EU kingdoms to be confortable having them on thier soil, so they were given this piece of rock as there own.

Contrary to what a lot of people think, the Knights were not exactly loved by the Maltese, and the gentry shunned them. The Knights, in thier turn, particularly since it was more important for them to have a harbour then a city, built thier rule around the Grand Harbour and then Valletta.

Thus they succeeded in killing off all the importance of Mdina as the capital and left the Maltese leite to thier own solitude. Hence Mdina, the silent city.

There is an excellent documentary from the BBC i found on You tube which explains the influx of the Moorish culture in the European mainland....if you have the time go for it.....it will explain exactly what I am talking about here.

Don't forget, our islands are strategically placed just off the tip of the EU mainland, halfway to North Africa.

All the major cultures that ventured to and for across the Med have always found it necessary to take Malta under their influence due to it's formidable harbor zone around Valletta. And it is formidable, probably unique as a safe harbour.

Having come this far, I suggest you check out visitmalta.com so you can have visuals of what these islands are all about.....

The historic part would take too long to explain here....for such a tiny piece of rock in the middle of nowhere, I believe we have an incredible history and heritage to be extremely proud of.

At least, I am.
