Too bad it wasn't about Stalingrad. people forget it was the Russians that really won WW2 and the US/Uk came in later. The Russians released the death camps then took a VERY heavy toll on german women.
"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot springs to mind, telling the tale of a Great Lake iron ore boat sunk with all hands perishing in a November gale on Lake Superior on Nov. 10, 1975. Although Lightfoot took some 'artistic license' to tell the tale, it remains one of the most famous songs of his.
I agree that the Edmund Fitzgerald is probably the saddest song ever.
However, this song is about an emotion that no one would understand except the person who feels it. The Little Prince, a character in a classic book said, "It is only in the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye" meaning that emotions don't have to make logical sense. Therefore, it is a very sad song.
